The City Backlash Begins

1208wportcity.jpg Stop trying to act all cool and not excited when we all know that The City premieres on MTV tonight! If you do choose to tune in, you'll find Whitney Port (pictured at the 2006 VMAs) leaving sunny California for New York City in order to work for Diane von Furstenberg, but the NY Post has it that "She doesn't really work. She is hardly ever in the office." Shocking! The show is a spin-off of The Hills, which is a spin-off of Laguna Beach, which was a spin-off of real life. Just like its predecessors, the series is taking heat for being a scripted reality show, but it's also being called out for being a little bit too L.A. and not enough NYC. However, Whitney insists she is "living in either midtown or the Gramercy area--I don't really know, to be perfectly honest. I'm in a tall building, way up high." NYMag has a lot more in a sprawling 4-page article on the series.

File this under the "Who Gives A Shit" column.

Agreed. I used to think Carlson was just a vapid hipster but now I'm not sure if she's just a corporate media drone. At least Chung is consistent in her role as the champagne liberal. Maybe MTV should just do a show featuring the editors of Gothamist.

how much do you get paid to post these?

Diane von Furstenberg is still alive?

Jen Carlson is a 17 year old in a 30 year old's body

Another MTV soap opera for unemployed Gen Y'ers.

It premieres tonight?!?!?!? lyke O-M-G!!!

I'm with you, 1-8 . . . And yet, we all read the article.

Yep. Just like how millions of Americans care more about celebrity lives than the state of the county. OMG she/he is getting married. Like so what?

Dear Gothamist Staff:

No offense to Jen Carlson but I really dislike these kinds of articles.

A) Whether or not they are actually corporate sponsored, they really give off that kind of reek.

B) There are plenty of other blogs that cover this kind of thing better. You are compromising the Gothamist brand by posting this kind of stuff.

Generally I really enjoy Gothamist (and Jen's writing for that matter), but please consider doing less of this. It's the equivalent of a college radio station playing Britney Spears-- kids could hear this crap anywhere. Don't you want to play us a song we haven't heard before?

Please take it as constructive criticism...

Still a Fan,

Next time I should skim the article for any reference to words "Laguna" or "Hills" so I'll know better than to waste time reading it and then get upset about learning more about shows I don't want to know more about. Ignorance of all things MTV is pure bliss.

Jen Carlson's posts tend to be those that I skip; due both to subject matter & writing ability. It's bad enough that you [Gothamist] still watch (and worse, still WRITE about and post clips from) SNL, but really, MTV?!?! My 10 year old nephew won't even watch that shit. Now, South Park, that's another story (to the utter dismay of his parents and to my delight).

they come within 20 feet of me I will scoop up the nearest pile of dog shit and hurl it at them
