Passing Strange was an incredible show. Can't wait for the Spike Lee version!
Don't forget Black Watch! hands down one of the most amazing shows I have ever seen...
@ Wesley: Agreed on Black Watch, but since I caught the first run in '07 and not the second visit to St. Ann's, I had to leave that one behind.
The Tonys may have snubbed Passing Strange, but you snubbed In the Heights, Gypsy, Next to Normal, and Boeing Boeing from this list!
I would also add Ivo Van Hove's Opening Night to the list. One of the most viscerally exciting nights in the theatre I've had this year.
Rebecca, I think Del Signore snubbed those productions because they were overrated and not deserving of a place on a "best of" list.
jollyship the whiz-bang was good, & i'll definitely rent passing strange.
who is the hot bald girl in macbeth??
I loved Passing Strange as well and was sorry that it closed so early. I wonder if it was more difficult for people to relate to if they weren't culturally conflicted or artistically inclined.
I saw Spring Awakening a few weeks after that and was sorely disappointed. I thought it was supposed to be a rock musical but I couldn't stand the tinkly Duncan Sheik tunes.
Passing Strange was good with an excellent cast although I thought the first act needed some tightening up.
Apparently it had limited appeal and not enough ticket buyers to support it. Maybe Obama can arrange a government bail-out to revive the show.
A lot of Broadway theater goers are out of town visitors with families and probably didn't want to take their kids to a show with as much cursing and sexual content as Passing strange had.
