Speed-the-Plow Losing Audience Post-Piven

122408piven.jpgAs expected, actor Jeremy Piven's abrupt departure from the Broadway revival of David Mamet's Speed-the-Plow is costing the show's investors a mint; they had expected to finally break even just when Piven quit due to "mercury poisoning." The box office take dropped 33% in the wake of his withdrawal, and the money guys are livid. One producer tells the Post, "We were so close to recouping, and then this jerk screwed it up." Even Piven's former cast mate Raul Esparza is lashing out, telling the audience during curtain call last Sunday: "Today was the first time I really enjoyed playing this show. I hope you weren't expecting a big TV star." Meanwhile, actor Fisher Stevens has surfaced to defend Piven, testifying that he suffered from mercury poisoning earlier this year while eating fish four or five times a week during production of documentary The Cove, about the slaughter of mercury-loaded dolphins.

I attended Tuesday night's performance. There were a few people who asked for refunds before the show. A number of people sitting near me must have been from out of town and didn't even know Piven dropped out, so there was much grumbling when they found out.

Norbert Leo Butz who is taking over until Macy comes on, had only been in rehearsals for four days and wasn't even off book for about 70% of the show. But all things considered, he was OK.

I really like Raul Esparza so I was actually more interested in seeing him anyway. He totally kicked ass and the people who were complaining about Piven's absence were raving about Esparza by the end of the show.

Blah, blah, blah. In this stupid cult of celebrity, where celebrity is based on so little today, stories like this are less and less uncommon. He's just another pampered douche who everyone rushes to pamper and the misery perpetuates.

People should see this show, regardless of who's in it. The star of a play written by David Mamet is David Mamet. Not the runt from "Entourage."

Mercury poisoning makes you insane.
