If you've passed by 57th Street and Park Avenue you've most likely noticed a building filled with balloons being saturated with LED lights subtly changing colors. WCBS investigated and found the creators, Hello Darling, who say all in all there's 10,000 balloons of different sizes in there, with the largest measuring in at 8 feet! They have a little video on their site showing the piece being put together, allegedly with the help of someone in Brooklyn. Leave any sharp objects at home and go check it out yourself.

While this particular piece is kind of silly, I hope this is one of the first of many artistic uses for space that has lost all commercial value.
I saw some friends do a musical performance in an abandoned storefront on 42nd between 2nd and 3rd just last Monday.
During the late 70's unrentable space in the World Trade Center buildings was used as artists lofts.
And who (if you're old enough to remember) can forget all those flat black canvases the MTA "gave" Keith Harring in the subway stations in the '80s because no-one would buy the ad space.
One of the many cool things about New York is that little is wasted.

I walked by recently when on my way to a client meeting, and it looks wicked cool.
I also walked by. Stopped and couldn't stop smiling. Made me feel like a kid again.
