The double-parking Santa who got a big 'ol ticket as an early Christmas present is speaking out! The Daily News reports that "he appreciates the outpouring of support, but he won't accept any charity to pay the $115 fine." He doesn't, however, want to pay it himself either. Commonly known as Chip Cafiero, he says he is "very appreciative to hear that so many people want to help him out, but as a matter of principle, we have to fight this ticket." Allegedly he'd like to prove a point about parking in the area; "These meter maids are harassing our small businesses in Bay Ridge, and it is time that we make a stand and fight for what's right. All those people who wanted to help Santa may be getting something a little extra special under the tree this year." Cafiero was dressed as Claus to hand out gifts to children when he was ticketed—so many, including Marty Markowitz, have rallied to support him.

The law's the law...if he was illegally parked, he should pay the fine. His altruism/generosity has nothing to do with anything.
"His altruism/generosity has nothing to do with anything." It sure does. I would rather see a 100 of these samta type people doing good, rather than worry about a single double parked car.
He should get in touch with http://nycsantacon.com/
they will rally with him against a bunch of illiterate meter maids. Yes that is what they are, meter maids even if they are male. They are revenue providers for a city corrupt with people that generate money for their own salaries.
PS: The next time you jay walk Schwartzie I hope the NYPD tasers you.
Fighting for what's right? Double parking is not right.
"Yes that is what they are, meter maids even if they are male."
Ooh that's a low insult, calling a man a woman. The worst.
You're kind of a douche, Snoopy. How dare you use that wonderful beagle's name.
"meter maids are harassing our small businesses"
Oh spare me
Utterly ridiculous. If dressing up as Santa is an excuse to break the law, then it would be on the books as a defense. Dude should shut up and pay the ticket.
I agree with #2 - don't want money? Why not? Make a case out of this and raise a lot of money for charity. Sounds good to me.
This is stupid. People, Santa doesn't exist. Grow the f*ck up. Also, letting him off would mean opening it up to anyone who gets a parking ticket.

You know, there are going to be a lot of ex-Blackwater employees looking for work soon. I think maybe they would be better suited to deal with illegal parking.
Why was Santa created ?
I don't know.
But I know Santa has been maintained
by Macy's, Walmart, and other capitalist who
wants to make money in November and December.
Santa would have been forgotten and unused
if Macy's and Walmart don't need to make money.
Why was that Santa giving gifts to children?
Who paid him to do this ?
What was the reason behind the effort ?
These meter maids are harassing our small businesses in Bay Ridge, and it is time that we make a stand and fight for what's right.
Jesus Fucking Christ. South Brooklyn is the double parking capital of the world. I've seen people double park when there is a perfectly good, legal space right there on the block. You can't drive up the avenues without weaving around people blocking up both sides of the street. (I mean, seriously, if you must double park, at least look around and note where the other assholes like you have already parked.) And everybody drives these douchey lexus and mercedes SUVs that look like turds on wheels, as if to say "I make a decent amount of money, but I still have no class whatsoever."
I have no love for the TEA agents when they comb the residential blocks generating some truly debatable tickets, but I must say they do a good job when they focus on the real problem. It must be depressing to deal with these entitled fuckheads every single day.
Santa's double-parked car could have blocked an emergency vehicle from getting to the scene of an accident or a fire.
If Santa can double park, then Hanukkah Harry should be able to also.
"as a matter of principle, we have to fight this ticket.""
I don't see what the grounds would be on which to fight it. He's not saying he wasn't double parked... so the grounds would be that he should be able to double park? Because he was doing something nice at the time? Because not allowing double parking is inconvenient for some people?
""These meter maids are harassing our small businesses in Bay Ridge"
Even if true, that has nothing to do with his case. He wasn't there to shop at a local store, he wasn't delivering merchandise to a merchant... well, I have to say I really don't understand what he was doing. "Handing out presents to kids." What does that mean? Specific kids? Walking down the street just randomly handing out presents? Sitting in a chair in a store with a line of kids waiting to sit in his lap?
Clearly this story needs more investigation.
"Santa" was part of a political campaign sponsored by Borough President Markowitz to encourage people to shop in the Bay Ridge Area. Mr. Cafiero is the Events Co-ordinator for State Senator Marty Goldman. This Santa had an Agenda, and was not doing it out of the kindness of his heart. They are now using this ticket to seek publicity. Shame on you Santa!!
I agree w/KatieD and others. I've delivered carloads of stuff to charities -- and I'd _expect_ to be ticketed if I double-parked, even if I were dressed as Santa, was wrapped in the American Flag, and had 12 singing reindeer waiting in the SUV.
This isn't All About Altruism or about cops harassing merchants, since
#1, The guy wasn't making a business delivery via truck. He just double-parked his car, didn't bother to have anyone watch or move it, and is using this to push merchants' pre-existing protest re: ticketing.
#2, Bay Ridge is _plagued_ with double- and triple-parked non-biz vehicles. They trap cars trying to leave, are a hazard to drivers and pedestrians, and most people are glad to see them ticketed.
#3, Are traffic agents supposed to give a free pass to anyone in a Santa suit? Or only to "connected" people-in-costumes on specific civic errands? Or to anyone who claims to be helping with a holiday/civic/religious event, or making a charitable delivery? (Otherwise, you're favoring only those who celebrate Christmas.)
If you make enough exceptions, you create an appearance of favoritism, and you eviscerate the law -- since everyone will try to be an exception.
