Protest Outside Waverly Inn Spotlights Alleged "Slumlords"

121908jane.jpgPermanent residents of the The Jane Hotel in the West Village say conditions at the shabby-chic reinvention of the old Hotel Riverview are so horrid that they've no choice but to picket outside the landlords' other establishments, which include celebrity favorite The Waverly Inn. On Wednesday night they made quite a scene outside the restaurant, and apparently won the sympathy of Hugh Jackman. The Post reports that as they chanted "Slumlords!" and "Rats!" outside, Jackman approached them to talk. Looking at photos depicting the dilapidated conditions at The Jane, he reportedly gasped, "Oh, my God." Diane von Furstenberg also showed some pity, asking, "Who are the slumlords?" That would be Eric Goode and Sean McPherson, who also run the Bowery Hotel, where the group protested last night over what publicist Ronn Torossian, their representative, calls "appalling conditions. Rats run [around] daily, asbestos lingers and 99 complaints have been filed in recent months with city housing authorities."

Here's another slanted tale that one often hears from only one side in a story. There are long time residents, who do pay a fairly low rent for extremely small rooms and are grandfathered in thanks to their fighting for their rights under NYC tenants laws who are HAPPY with the JANE.

I know bcs I know a couple of them.

There was a lot of noise made by a few folks disgruntled by construction noise. Many new yorkers such as I have to endure similar inconveniences myself in my E.V. building for the moment. I have spent much time at the Jane and have never seen a rat.

The bathrooms and showers are great. The staff is uber polite with residents and guests alike.

Ofcourse things could be better. This is a for profit business.

But I have it on good source that all those complaints filed resulted in many inspections and the Jane is up to code in all areas.

JMH - Under the law (remember that?) EVERYONE has the right to live in clean and safe conditions. It doesn't matter how much or how little they pay. Whatever rent they pay, no one should be forced to move because the landlord does not maintain their building. If they're paying cheap rents, maybe that's all that they can afford; maybe there are other reasons that they don't wish to move (good neighborhood, close to work, winter is a crappy time to look for new digs, whatever). The point is, WHO ARE YOU TO JUDGE?

Oh GOD NO! Not absurdly cheap rents. Something tells me you'd be picketing too JMH in order to preserve a well cared for building for you and family.

They have a cool website, except the hands on the clock go backwards which is disturbing in a "Shining" sort of way.

I'm going to bet that these people are paying absurdly cheap rent and that's why they're not just moving out.
