Great article. I've been reading his blog for a week or 2 now, & love his photos. He finds the most incredible little details of the city.
Rhonda, the anonymity is understandable. They don't want to risk losing their jobs or not being hired for future jobs. I read a blog of another location scout who talks about his projects, but never mentions them by name, or who the actors are.

I don't really understand the anonymity behind this interview. There are lots of industry insiders in New York who would be willing to be interviewed with their names attached.

@JH4285

It's called Pomander Walk, between 94th and 95th, and Broadway and West End Ave, and I pass it nearly every day on the way to my gym (the New York Sports Club on that very block). I always crane my neck to sneak a peak in there, wondering what kind of people get to live there, what kind of a charmed life they all must lead. A couple of years ago, I read an article that basically confirmed my suspicions: the residents of that hidden street all know each other, celebrate occasions like Christmas, birthdays, and weddings with street-wide festivities, and their kids all grow up playing together. Apparently it was made as an exact replica of a theater set that was somehow based on a Dickens novel--you'd have to do your own digging to find out more.

::sigh::

My personal choice for all-time favorite spot in the city (in spite of the fact that it resides smack-dab in the middle of a still rather shabby part of Upper Manhattan--although perhaps this adds to its charm), is the entirely enchanting and you-have-to-see-it-to-believe-it street of painted wooden row houses known as Sylvan Terrace. Complete with cobble stone street and curving lamppost at the end. Go on a clear fall morning when the sky and the leaves are exactly the right color and you'll think you've traveled back in time--or just died and gone to heaven.

The one question I was curious about wasn't asked - how much do they pay for a particular location? Even a range would have been nice.

Great feature! I always think of this little residential complex up by West 96th when I think of unique places in New York. It looks like a Swiss village plopped in the middle of Manhattan and has a little courtyard similar to the one pictured above, only less New Englandy.

There are a lot of haters on this site, but you can't say that's not an awesome job. I'd do it in a heartbeat.

HA! He's right about Sonar Gaow (I think it might be Goan though. Anybody?). I've been going there since I was 14 (let's just say that's more than a decade) and it has never disappointed. It's still the best place inteh city for cheap Indian food.
