According to numerous reports, Mayor Bloomberg has agreed to issue the $400 property rebate checks to homeowners, a win for the City Council except that in exchange for the checks, the Council agreed to raise both the property tax (by 7%) and hotel room tax. The Staten Island Advance says, "If the city's Department of Finance begins printing them immediately, homeowners should receive their rebate checks shortly after the new year, around the same time they will get their new property tax bills." The NY Times also adds that Bloomberg will not cut $20 million from the budget and some Council members expect to vote on the agreement today (though they warned that the deal could collapse). Some numbers: The property rebate checks cost the city $256 million; raising the property taxes to 7% in January (instead of June, as previously planned) means an additional $600 million for the fiscal year; and the hotel room tax hike brings an additional $100 million between March 2009 and June 2010.

Quinn makes more money and we all get poorer. we are better off without the rebate than a property tax. This is ridiculous. Quinn has damage this city and our quality life to no avail. She extending term limits even though we voted TWICE for term limits. She belong in jail for the Slush Fund fiasco. No bill goes through the city council without her stamp of approval. Quinn Dictatorship stop the humane resolution from passing 2 days ago. Since Tony Avella is not in her favors, she makes sure anything with his name doesn't pass the city council. The resolution was for humane education to be taught in Schools. Also Quinn won't permit the bill for pets in housing and sprinklers in pet shops to pass. last month, 200 animals burn alive in their cages in a pet shop in the Bronx. Quinn in unethical and has no compassion. I hope the voters put her out to pastures.
They should both die. In a fire.
Our money will be spent on all the administrative cost to mail out these $400 rebate check. Is it worth it? Instead there should be NO property tax hike or if a property tax hike then it should be for high value properties and not middle class properties. Quinn has no problem wasting our money on her slush funds and her $600/hr criminal lawyer, yet she lives in a rent controlled apartment with her corporate lawyer partner.
Quinn has to go, go to hell!
Quinn truly has to go. How she ever got to this position is a mystery to me. This whole thing is a farce. I truly hope Bloomberg gets booted out in the next election. He has done absolutely nothing of value for this city.
This a-hole of a mayor and city councilor cannot find 600M more in cuts in a budget of over 35 Billion?!! Most states dont have budgets that size? What do they do with all this money? They are chasing everyone out of this city who is not on the public dole or extremely wealthy (and even the wealthy are moving their primary residences out of the city for tax reasons, but keeping their apartments). All this does is leave regular folks with a bigger bill year in and year out.
And don't forget Felix, being City Council is a PART TIME job and they still makes more than you.
quinn is a fucking pig
Yep ^
@schandenfreudian, yes I can't believe they work part time and gave themselves 25% raise. they don't even attend most of the hearings. Try reaching your council member by phone or mail. my council member never respond to me. All I receive is his mailings for more contributions. I used my councilmember's newletters to wipe my butt
everyone should take that rebate check sign the back wipe their buts with it and send it back to bloomberg to pay for their taxes. keep raising taxes and see who is left in new york. everyone should move to another state and all new york will be is full of welfare recipients and illegal immigrants who work off the books and send all their money back to their country so they can bring 10 more immigrants here for the free handouts that bloomberg and quinn give them. (welfare, food stamps , section 8, )have fun taxing them when all the hardworking people had enough of your bullshit
Here is the vote breakdown for everyone who voted no since the city council reuses to put the roll call up on their site... wonder why?! Addabbo, Avella, Barron, Como, Dilan, Felder, Fidler, Gennaro, Gentile, Gioia, Ignizio, McMahon, Monserrate, Nelson, Oddo, Reyna, Vacca, Vallone. At least a minority stood up for people trying to get by in this city.
The rest voted yes to this and should be booted out of office come election day!!!!!!!!!!
