Eli Manning will be in the same Pro Bowl as his brother Peyton. History is made! (But how does Matt Ryan feel about Eli's inclusion?) The Giants will send six to Hawaii, including both punter Jeff Feagles and placekicker John Carney. Combined age? 86. Their vaunted defense will have only one representative in Justin Tuck. That seems funny. The Giants' stellar offensive line did get some love. Guard Chris Snee will start, and center Shaun O'Hara will be a reserve.
Everyone loves Brett Favre, one of seven Jets to make it. But is he really more deserving than Philip Rivers, who leads the NFL in quarterback rating? Chad Pennington probably has a better case than Favre, who too often this year has done little more than throw really fast screen passes and make some dumb decisions. Some more deserving Jets that made the team: Thomas Jones, Alan Faneca, Leon Washington — maybe he should touch the ball more? — Nick Mangold, Kris Jenkins and Darrelle Revis. Luckily, no one cares about this game, and everyone will forget about the selections by the time the games start up again this weekend.

Obviously good looks do not run in the Manning DNA.
They need to lose some weight.
"But is he really more deserving than Philip Rivers, who leads the NFL in quarterback rating? "
Quarterback rating? You're joking, right? It's a bogus statistic that, thankfully, almost everyone ignores except for TV network producers who feel a need to have some numbers on the screen at all times.
Granted, Rivers is having a good year... but he's leading the AFC in only one relevant statistic: touchdown passes. His team's 6-8, though, which means the number of touchdowns he's thrown can best be summarized as "not enough."
Eli almost looks like that swimming dude that was in the Olympics. Not Mark Spitz the other guy.
@jaycjay - Shouldn't Pro Bowl players be judged on stats alone though? Obviously Favre got in because he's enormously popular with Jets fans and NFL fans. It's not because he's the best QB in the AFC.
That said, Favre does lead the AFC in completion percentage. Then again, he also completes more passes to the other team than anyone else in the AFC.
Matt Ryan certainly deserved consideration, but Eli earned the trip b/c of his leadership and 11 wins.
I wouldn't call their defense vaunted this year. 2008 has been more about their offense, in particular their o-line.
As for Favre, that's completely an undeserving sentimental pick, which happens often in Pro Bowl balloting.
Actually Tiki and Rondell Barber did this in 2006, so it isn't history. I guess you could make a case for the first brothers who are both QBs but thats very specific.
They won't even be playing in the same quarters.
Meh.
Does Peyton have a chin?
Its Ronde Barber.
Rivers deserves to go because of his stats especially touchdown passes. He's doing his job well, the rest of the team is fucking up, especially the defense. That is why they are only 6-8.
On the other side Ben Rothlisberger gets to go because of his teams record. He has thrown half as many td's as Rivers.
Anyone who voted for Brett Favre is a moron.
Maybe Rivers does deserve to go but the last three losses for the Chargers were pretty low scoring games... Even against good defenses, Rivers has something to do with not putting points on the board.
"Shouldn't Pro Bowl players be judged on stats alone though?"
Should they? Irrelevant. No all-star selection in any sport is based entirely on stats; they're all more popularity contests than anything else, because their real purpose is ratings. Of course in the case of the NFL's Pro Bowl nobody watches it anyway so they could probably could get away that kind of approach.
But my original comment wasn't disparaging statistics. Stats can be useful tools. My comment specifically disparaged "quarterback rating."
One big problem with using that stat today: it was formulated in 1973. Offenses in the NFL, especially the passing game, have changed a lot in 35 years.
Wow, more sports news from East Rutherford.
So whats happening with the Peoria Sunflowers?
