Obama is Time's Person of the Year

2008_12_btime.jpgDeciding not to make the "Person of the Year" you again, Time magazine opted to choose that popular cover boy, President-elect Barack Obama, as its Person of the Year for 2008. There's an article, an interview, an analysis of his basketball game (from his brother-in-law), but best is the gallery of 1980 photographs from Occidental College classmate Lisa Jack. Time also mentions runners-up—Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson, French President Nicolas Sarkozy (article written by Tony Blair), Alaska Governor Sarah Palin and Chinese director—and Olympics creative force—Zhang Yimou (article by Steven Spielberg)— as well as "People Who Mattered" (Ingrid Betancourt, Tina Fey, Michael Phelps, George Bush, Hillary Clinton...). Debate at your leisure.

Obama anything on a cover equals huge sales. That said, I'm hiking up Mt Rushmore to take measurements for them big ears of his.

Dear Shinobi, next year when the economy collapses? Ha!

    Sincerely,

    The Collapsed Economy

I have a friend that bought one of those

Time magazines. I heard they were collectors items. What are they getting on ebay?

My mother had an original copy of Look magazine from 1963 pertaining to the JFK assassination I bet that's worth a pretty penny now.

  • nycnewsjunkie

Can someone say, most amount of time magazine copies sold of any single issue ever... bet that played no role in this decision(excluding the liberal bias).

I can't wait until the Obamatoids wake up next year when the economy tanks and find out that the New Deal is a NO deal.

    Riots ensue.

Looks at what's going on in Greece and Iceland (as well as Thailand).

People are waking up about their corrupt government all over the world and it will spread like a wild fire.

  • Outter Burrougher

congratulations to Ms. Jack. It says in the photo essay that she never realized her dream of being a photographer - but hey, now you've gotten your work in Time!

  • DoctortedNYC

    Haha.

President Zero on the cover of another liberal fish wrapper.

  • citizenerased

Better than last year when it was "You".

It wasn't me last year, I didn't do shit.

  • fugothamist

yeah its amazing how nice a SHOW a totalitarian govt with lots of money can put together

  • djwerdna

I can't believe that Zhang Yimou was a runner-up. Yeah, he put on a good show (1/2 the result of vision and 1/2 because of unlimited resources from the government), but in the grand scheme of things it's not that important.

  • dr zippy

Time really pushed the envelope this year.

  • virgil

Did they really use Shepard Fairey's art for the cover, or do a ripoff of his art?

I guess I could find out for myself, but I'm astoundingly lazy.

  • ides_of_march

Just a "Person" of the year? That's almost an insult to the messiah, demi-god or Oprah's "The One"

  • berniegoetz

OMG. Did you just call Obama "boy." Shame on you, Gothamist. How insensitive can you be.
