Vice President-elect Joe Biden may have picked up a German shepherd puppy, partially sating the public's desire to know what kind of pets the incoming administration will have, but even a cute dog can be controversial. PETA is upset because the puppy apparently came from an animal breeder...and "If it weren't bad enough that Biden chose to buy from a breeder, we are now trying to confirm the accuracy of a report that was sent to us alleging that he bought his dog from a known puppy mill operator!" The Humane Society is also upset Biden bought a dog from a breeder "since he has been a leader on animal-protection issues and has championed a number of important animal-welfare reforms in the Senate," but Biden's spokesperson said, "He is an advocate for rescuing animals, as shown by his rescue of the Biden's current cat, Daisy, from a local shelter."

Aren't we in a financial crisis and a couple wars? I'm getting a little tired of PETA's whining on this topic.
leave the man alone. jeezus
Obama's going to have Biden locked in a closet five minutes after the inauguration with or without a puppy.
That reminds me; time to renew my PETA membership (People Eating Tasty Animals)
If the dog is in a loving home and being taken care of well why should it matter if it was adopted or not?
"If it weren't bad enough that Biden chose to buy from a breeder, ..."
Would they feel better if he bought the dog from a homosexual instead?
Steven,
It matters because demand drives supply. The more people buy from puppy mills, the more puppy mills there will be. We are in no danger of running out of dogs and cats in this country. If the day ever comes when we need to start having "don't neuter your pet! help the shortage!" advertising, then you can start making your point about loving homes.
Because right now, millions of animals are dying in shelter every year.
I wish PETA would STFU. Seriously.
Perhaps it's important for Biden to know that his puppy comes from a good line, and not a mangy mutt that may pee on the official carpet or hump the POTUS.
Oh enough about PETA...
Look at those paws!
I am on the side of PETA on this one. Puppy mills are terrible places and there are plenty of shelters out there that are burdened with too many dogs. He could have made an example for anyone out there thinking of getting a dog.
However, that is one insanely cute dog.
@5: Ides, that's the first funny thing I've ever heard you say. But it was still funny.
In any event, this is the animal-rights movement's worst sin: telling people who are doing something good that they're not doing good ENOUGH. Oh, you gave a dog a loving home? Well, it was the wrong dog. Oh, you support animal rights and no-kill shelters? Well, you're still eating meat. Oh, you're vegetarian? Well, you still exploit cows for milk. You're vegan? Lettuce killer.
Until you're an ascetic yogi ingesting nothing but your own non-denominational prayers for the environment, you're still doing wrong. And, sadly, it's holier-than-thou nonsense like this that prevents people from listening to the actual good points PETA sometimes has.
His "quality" breeder sold him a bill of goods. She has faked her AKC registrations in the past. He should have adopted from a shelter or German Shepherd rescue group. There are tons of cute Shepherd puppies on Petfinder.
"The AKC's Management Disciplinary Committee has suspended Ms. Linda Brown, Spring City, PA, from all AKC privileges for one year, effective April 10, 2006, and imposed a $1000 fine for having submitted or caused to be submitted three litter registration applications that she knew, should have known, or had a duty to know contained false certifications as to the sire and/or dam (DNA exclusion). (German Shepherd Dog)"
So who should have that puppy? It's alive, it doesn't know the difference between breeder pups and rescued dogs, and Joe Biden will treat it well. Peta wants attention? I recommend they self-immolate themselves in front of pet shops.
NannyState:
The person who should have that puppy is a less-informed person who doesn't know better, not our Vice President elect that has dozens of animal rights groups lobbying for him to adopt!
Biden sucks.
PETA is dumb. The End.
As a volunteer with a dog rescue group, I invite everyone who says it doesn't matter if you buy a dog from a breeder / pet shop to help me answer phone calls and emails for a week. Every day I am bombarded with people saying they can't keep their pets and will need to kill them because they can not find a new home for them. Senator Biden had an opportunity to set a great example and show other potential dog owners the wonderful dogs that are available for adoption He blew it.
The simple answer to this breeder mill problem is to kill off all cats and dogs. No cats and dogs = no cat and dog breeders and no more humans owning cats and dogs. Problem solved.
Next we kill off the carrots because carrots is a Dutch conspiracy. They didn't use to be orange, you know. Therefore they are not worthy to be eaten. Kill the carrots!
Shut up, PETA!!
It's not as if Biden bought it from a puppy mill and then tried to eat it for lunch.
I like animals but everytime I hear about PETA morons making stupid statements without thinking through, I feel the urge to kick a puppy and eat a nice juicy hamburger just to piss these people off!!! All commenters here who defend these PETA morons are also deserving of a swift kick in their asses!
Every day I am bombarded with people saying they can't keep their pets
Well, wouldn't that be their fault, and not Biden's? Seriously, the main culprit here is irresponsible pet owners, who
1) Don't understand what a serious commitment it is to take on a pet. Or,
2) Don't bother to get their animal spayed or neutered. Or,
3) Purposefully breed their animals without any demand lined up. Amateurs do this all the time, because they think it will be fun.
If all these owners weren't so damn stupid, the shelters wouldn't be overflowing with unwanted animals. And, frankly, I'll add
4) Bleeding hearts who think euthanizing an animal is a sin. It's not. The dog is not going to puppy heaven.
Adopting an animal is a good thing, don't get me wrong. But people have gotten downright hysterical over this issue, blaming people who produce wanted animals instead of all of the jerks abandoning animals.
"PETA" is a special code word that Gothamist uses.
It means "you need not pay attention to this post from here on out; focus on something else."
A populist Senator living like an elitist?
I'm shocked!
Next we'll be expecting them to send their kids to public school.
@5: Ides, I'm still laughing at your comment.
"In any event, this is the animal-rights movement's worst sin: telling people who are doing something good that they're not doing good ENOUGH."
QFT.. and this applies to most eco-movements. Dunno what it is about the people that get behind those causes that leads them to always make perfect the enemy of good.
But this puppy was born; it needed a home and it's not the pup's fault... how do we know it was a puppy mill and not a reputable breeder?
@1 we are in a financial crisis because of our own apathy and greed which is why dogs are also overbreed and abuse. don't scapegoat the innocent and take responsibility
PETA is a bit like Terrell Owens. They have a big mouth and kill as many or more animals than they save (TO drops as many balls as he catches). Anyone who wants to argue to the contrary is just whining for the sake of whining.
H i! One thing great about this country is we all have our own opinion about everything. Reguardless of what kind of dog he got or where he got it from, alot of people prefer to have purebreed PUPPIES because I feel that MOST, NOT ALL dogs at the shelter are mixed and if your parchel to a certain breed WHY should he be a target just because of his choice? My parents bred German Shepards all my life and I have always had one and will continue to get them because it is what I prefer, a purebred German Shepard puppy, what's wrong with that choice? I would most definitly go to the shelter if they had what I was specifically looking for, but if not I would go elsewhere. Mr. Biden just happen to get a GREAT one free (lucky him) and the breeder that gave it to him is smart for advertising for free! Happy Holidays to All!
damn big paws. that guy's gonna be huge.

Also PETA is the one with the true foot in the mouth disease
It is horrible that PETA can make false accusations and statements like that !!!!Jolyndy's German Shepherd puppies are born into an environment better than most humans. She has olympic size indoor built in pools just so her dogs can get the best aquatic excercise. I have purchased Shepherds from this establishment and am very impressed, (having Shepherds all my life). Biden and the Delaware K-9 officer(who reccomended the breeder) did their home work!!!
Everyone is very disappointed with PETA'S remarks.A person should have the right to purchase through a breeder or not.
PETA owes an apology!!!! This is far from a puppy mill!!!!
