Beatrice Inn Classing up Atlantic City

Earlier this year it was announced that a Hamptons for Hipsters was about to take shape in Atlantic City, courtesy of the Beatrice Inn boys Paul Sevigny and Matt Abramcyk. The two have taken their aesthetic and transferred it over to The Chelsea's 5th floor, which houses a game room, several lounges, a pool, patios and a restaurant. But you know what they say: you can't take the New Jersey out of Atlantic City.

We recently visited the first non-gaming boutique hotel to open in the area since the 1960's, and while nice n' quiet during the off-season daytime hours, the night brought locals and overpriced drinks (which can be avoided by procuring one's own alcohol and pouring it up in the hotel room). But the 5th floor is so spacious, with so many nooks, that the local takeover is hardly a downside. The restaurant on the floor, however, Stephen Starr's Chelsea Prime, may be the hotel's biggest downside. Our lobster bisque was crunchy with shells, not to mention bitter, and the caprese salad was comprised of mushy tomato chunks and approximately one cube of mozzarella. Inedible and overpriced, the establishment will hopefully work to improve this over the course of their inaugural year. To the staff's credit, they picked up the uneaten plates quickly, apologized, and took them off the bill.

There are plenty of upsides to the place (though one recent visitor complained of the off-season state of things). The decor is gorgeous, the staff is very friendly and accommodating, and the view is great. While the peak season prices can be a bit high, off-season prices start at $109/night. If you want to test the waters outside of NYC during the holidays, they've got not only a Christmas special, but also a New Year's Eve bash planned, with a variety of packages offered. CityRoom reported earlier today that a new luxury train will start running direct from New York to Atlantic City in February.

great time to open a boutique hotel in the armpit of the northeast. i give it 8 months.

"But you know what they say: you can't take the New Jersey out of Atlantic City."

Then NY'ers should spend time in lovely Coney Island or on picturesque Orchard Beach. How about a beautiful stroll along the quaint streets of Farrockaway.
All desirable beach getaways that attract the beautiful set in NYC..................

But you know what they say: you can't take the nauseating, obnoxious, trying WAYYYYYY too hard to seem important provincialism out of New York.

Oh, the audacity of Atlantic City locals to actually patronize an establishment where they live! You'd think they should be grateful New Yorkers are visiting and would have the good sense to stay away and give them their space.

Dipshit.

It's all the interference and development from greedy non-locals that ruined the Jersey shore in the first place. See http://www.greetingsfromasburyparkmovie.com/Synopsis.html as a case in point.

That is the truth.

AC is just way way way way too far for me but I wish them luck..I guess their target would be the Borgata crew of people..

^At least the Borgata has fun games and good restaurants. This place only offers douchey hipster kitsch.

Ha. The New Yorkers "class" up Atlantic City. You can spot the New Yorkers from a mile away when they are in AC and they are the furthest thing from classy.

Also, the Elephant Hotel is still standing just down the island in Margate.

AC, just like Las Vegas, is a place which attracts the worst of society. Don't paint all New Yorkers with the same brush just because of your experience with a few obnoxious jerks. You wouldn't know where I came from unless I told you based on my behavior.

$6 for altoids. ha!

i was in AC on saturday. it was dead.

I remember the Beatrice, back when the West Village had interesting people and good restaurants.

Glad to see the hipsters and their wannabes flying south. Please take the awful Austrian place on Washington St with you!

This hotel rocks! When I can't get into Borgata (or am tired of paying $400+ per night) I have been staying at The Chelsea. Contrary to this article, Chelsea Prime (in my opinion) is the best steak house in town.

The hotel was done just right and the service is top notch.
