In case there has been any ambiguity up until this point, Michael Mele is not a nice person. One of his employees at the Quizno's he manages in Orange County recounted to the Post today about how her boss berated her, screaming into the phone at her for revealing to police where he lived when they came by investigating the disappearance of Laura Garza.
And yesterday The Today Show spoke to Adriana McLean, one of the women Mele had masturbated on while lurking in the Palisades Center mall parking lot. McLean, who was only 17 at the time, recounted the attack, saying, "He was like a predator. He ran after me. He didn't try to do it subtly at all...As soon as he put his hands on me, I knew I was in a lot of trouble and I thought that I was gonna die."
The show also spoke to friends of Garza's from her hometown in Texas where she had recently relocated to Brooklyn from. They reiterated that her leaving a club like Marquee with a stranger such as Mele was completely out of character, that she was the type to nurse one drink throughout an evening. When asked why they thought she would have behaved differently last week, one told Meredith Viera, "He probably slipped something in her drink."

Unfortunately unlikely, given that the reports of her behavior are accurate. The drugs typically "slipped into someone's drink" tend to make the victim unconscious or at least compliant to non-responsive. They don't make the victim dance, kiss, and make out with the person who supplied them.

Actually, the post article does say -- or at least imply -- that he owns it. The employee he was yelling at is the manager, working for him. Here's the relevant statement from the article:

I thought it was HIS DAD that owned the crappy Quizno's. Wonder if the dad is involved with getting rid of the body. I somehow think he probably is since they can't find it and he is an ex cop. This case is so frightening in every way. Hope they find her soon.

Im sorry... i feel really bad for this family, i do. But, do you really go home and tell your parents how much you booze it up when you go out? These parents need to get a clue. There is video footage of them leaving together. Sure it was a bad choice but it doenst sound like he forced her to do it. With that said, yes, he IS a nutbag and should should never see the light of day again.

Beyond that, it's not uncommon for young people who leave their smaller hometowns to come to "the big city" to then begin behaving differently than they did "back home" -- just as it is with kids heading off to college.
Everything her friends and parents say about how she acted back in Texas may be perfectly accurate. But remember, she came to NYC wanting to get away from that life.
Laura Garza had been in New York for only about six months, and she may have been unusually naive and trusting. Unfortunately for her, she may not have realized how potentially dangerous those clubs can be.
This guy is done. Another creep that should be off the streets for good.
It's really a shame that this piece of trash can't get laid without force or criminal deception. At least he'll be able to get some free ass in jail.
