Astroland Rocket Needs a Home!

2008_12_astrorock.jpgThe Save Coney Island community is worried that the Astroland Rocket will be sold as scrap if the rocket remains homeless (Astroland is being dismantled). An email from the Save Coney Island Group, via Curbed: "Help us Save The Astroland Rocket!! We have to find a new location for the Astroland Rocket soon or it will be sold for scrap metal!! Astroland will pay to relocate the rocket if we find a space for it!! It has to be somewhere secure, where people can't vandalize it. Any ideas??" The city was reportedly in negotiations with developer Thor Equities about taking over the property, but it's unclear where those talks are. Photo: lornagrl on Flickr

    Need a space that fits? How about lodging it up the ass of the CEO of Thor Equities?! That person seems to be a giant asshole, no? Ugh, sorry, stumbled in here way too late..

    so why doesn't gothamist do some RESEARCH and FIND OUT where the "NEGOTIATIONS" are at? Pretty clear to me that the city of nyc is going to swoop up this land, do whtever they want with it, appear like heros,meanwhile the woman was given a deadline of january to get her rides off the land!

    Would totally fit in my back yard.

    Love how you cropped the photo so under the rocket it reads "..die park.'

    Appropriate unfortunately.

    @el192: I like that idea!

    Why wouldn't this just go to the Coney Island Museum?

    addedum: if burger boy needs a house i totally have space for him!

    @el192: That's a fantastic idea.

    It's an icon...It needs to stay in Coney Island. How about within the gates of the Cyclone's area (i.e. on the ground or above the loading area house, if there's room)? I agree about saving the Mom & Pop burger figures too...is Gregory & Paul's safe from demolition? The city needs to do more to bring back Astroland during the interim of CI's redevelopment. Build rides, not malls...and save the history. Enough with all of this bulldozing...Astroland, the rocket, Gregory & Paul's are all beloved symbols of CI.

    "Socrates Sculpture Park would be a great place for the rocket!"

    my thoughts exactly! though it makes more sense for it to stay in brooklyn... what about that little park under the brooklyn bridge? or even give it to the brooklyn museum? they must have room for it somewhere.

    How about the Museum of the City of New York?

    Why don't we incorporate it into the plans for the Freedom Tower?

    I have a secure yard and would be happy to keep it safe until a long-term place for display is found. And if one isn't found, we're happy to keep it.

  • Outter Burrougher

    I'd be happy to have it on my patio!

  • robingee

    What about Mom and Pop Burger on top of the snack bar?? I love those guys!

  • jackdonaghy

    Somebody would definitely buy that sentimental symbol at an auction.

  • davejohnny

    How long is it? I have a large roof.

  • pal

    Socrates Sculpture Park would be a great place for the rocket!

    If placed strategically on the Coney Island Pier, it could look like a launching pad.
