Report: Bloomberg, Quinn Fight Over $400 Property Tax Rebate Check

2008_12_blqui.jpgProperty tax rebate check update! According to the Post, this past Sunday, "Mayor Bloomberg and City Council Speaker Christine Quinn, usually political allies, had a closed-door argument at Gracie Mansion over his refusal to release" the checks. While Bloomberg claimed the $256 million used for the $400 checks would be better used for other city needs, it turns out he can't cancel them without City Council approval. Bloomberg and the Council had been trying to work out a deal, but Quinn got apparently annoyed at Bloomberg for dragging his feet with actually getting the checks issued. Yesterday, she said, "I think there is not a snowball's chance in hell that the City Council is going to pass a bill that would allow the rebate to not to go this year... The mayor should send the checks out, he should tell Finance to print them, we should move this along."

Christine Quinn, how about returning the 25% pay raise you gave yourself and the council for part time jobs. how about returning the 4 million in your campaign fund you raise through slush funds. how about permitting the bill for sprinkler in pet shops to be hear so animals are no longer burn alive in their cages.

  • ugh

Too late Christine, you have already blown your chances of being Mayor (after Bloomberg and his 15 terms)

I'm a renter, so apparently my taxes aren't of a sort that should qualify for a rebate.

The rebate was put in place because there was a surplus. There is no longer a surplus. There should no longer be a rebate.

This is a perfect snapshot of America 2008:

The government gives boatloads of money to politically connected corporate idiots who ran their business into the ground, but the average citizen wants a little bit of their own tax dollars back and suddenly imperial douchebags like Bloomberg decide it's time for fiscal restraint.

King George III was a rank amateur at imposing harsh taxes on the people compared to the greedy bastards we have in government right now.

    Oh please!

After the term limits battle, this...along with the city council's proposed cuts, are probably all an act to show they're not Bloomberg's minions.

  • ides_of_march

If I change my name to AIG or Bear Stearns can I have my rebate?

  • whitecastlerock

The Yankees and Mets need to have their stadiums finished on time!

Let Bloomie stop the rebate. That would probably sink his chances for a third term, which isn't a bad thing.
