If this Craigslist post is to be believed, Vesuvio Bakery, the 90-year-old Spring Street institution that's been closed for renovations since July, is for sale. The sharp-eyed Eater crowd spotted the listing this morning, which reads: "Great Bakery - cafe or retail shop, $5,500 per month, 400 sq ft, plus 1,000 sf basement, two 400 sf coal bread ovens vented through chimneys, $140k key money." There have been rumors for some time now that the beloved bakery would never reopen, and visitors from as far afield as Israel and Sicily have been dismayed to arrive on our shores and find it closed. (One stymied customer even came from as far away as the Bronx, according to this photo of sad graffiti at the shuttered bakery.) So...who's got $140K in seed money to open a bakery?

first Zito, now Vesuvio. Parisi still hanging in though, but not as good. Zito was the best, hands down.
I have to say, I never loved Vesuvio. It had some atmosphere for sure, but, i never found the actual baked goods/coffee that phenomenal
hey sometimes the bronx feels like another planet.
that's probably because it is.
fuck
Would-be bakery operators will have to go to Prince St. to find the venerable Vesuvio.
If I were to visit from a foreign country, I would be disappointed to find out that the pastries kind of suck and that I was a taken by world-class NYC marketing once again.
