The City Council really wants its homeowning constituents to get their $400 property rebate checks, though Mayor Bloomberg prefers to cancel them, given the city's impending budget crisis. According to the Daily News, "City council leaders say they can save taxpayers money and preserve homeowners' $400 rebate by cutting spending on police recruiting and standardized test prep in schools, and eliminating grass clippings from city garbage pickups." City Council Speaker Christine Quinn said that the suggested cuts would save $170 million, which still doesn't cover the $256 million the property rebate checks cost. Still, Quinn said, "No one in [City Hall] sadly believes that this is the last round of cuts, so let's get ahead of the game and make as many cuts as we can that don't erode core services."

How about eliminating the borough presidents?
They are one big waste of money.
Eliminate police, education, water, oxygen, and food. Tremendous savings for all...
Eliminating that stupid three district garage planned for Spring street would add 500 extra extra large ones in expenses. HRP doesn't have money to develop Gansevort pier anyway in the foreseeable future, so why go through the exercise of clearing it of what's there now?
how about that 25% pay increase Quinn gave herself or the lifelong pension for extending term limits. or what about working full time instead of part time for the 125K pay as council members?
quinn and bloomberg are a joke. everyone should take that rebate check sign the back and wipe their butts and send it back to pay their property tax with it.they are robbing all hard working taxpayers. keep rasing taxes and see who you have left living in new york. when the taxpayers leave and move to another state all you will have here are your welfare recipients. and your illegal immigrants . good luck taxing them .
