The express buses that many commuters rely upon to travel between their jobs in Manhattan to their far-flung outer-borough apartments are going under the MTA's sharpened budget knife, with an expected fare increase from $5 to $7.50, along with service cuts. But not if Mayor Bloomberg has anything to say about it—sources tell the Daily News that Bloomberg is pressuring MTA board members to spare the express buses. Next week the board is expected to adopt a "Draconian" budget, which could include the elimination of at least eight express bus routes. Bloomberg is telling his four city-appointed board members to give express bus riders a break because many of them lack other mass transit options to get to and from Manhattan.

"many of them lack other mass transit options to get to and from Manhattan"
Bullshit.
Where there is an express bus there is a regular bus not far off. Express buses are the business class of buses. Bloombergs contemporaries take the express buses so of course he doesn't want them tampered with.
This is par for the course with our billionaire mayor who breaks the backs of the middle class to provide for the upper echelon and the untouchable poor of this city.
Good luck with that third term you filthy animal.
^You're wrong. There are many sections of Queens that do not have reliable bus to subway connections. Some of them are higher income areas, but many, in Southeast Queens, are definitely not. Either way, no one deserves a 50% hike.
Longacre is correct. Many residents of Queens live quite far from a subway stop. Would you have them drive into Manhattan? The express bus makes their commute possible, and they already pay $5 per ride. Lighten up.
#1: Express buses are not the business class of buses. They simply take you from the outer boroughs to the city. Local buses do not do this. And the people who take them are by no means Bloombergs pals, I certainly am not. Most are older office and admin type workers from places like Sheepshead Bay and Midwood.
Anyway, I have lived in Brooklyn for 10 years now and discovered the express bus last year. What took me 45 mins to get to the city now takes me 10 minutes. If it goes to 7.50 it's back to the F train.
express buses don't take you to the subway, they take you into manhattan.
they are the business class of bus service. non stop direct to midtown/downtown then back to seagate or whatever shore community.
$15 x 5 days x 4 weeks = $300.
You can park in the city for $10-$12/day. With gas, that's probably about the same cost per day. I look forward to everyone then complaining about how there are too many cars in Manhattan. People aren't going to spend 3 hours/day on a standard MTA bus to commute.
The idea is to REDUCE the number of cars in Manhattan, people.
Graffiti removal costs quite a bit of money, time and effort, and doesn't make the trains any faster.
The MTA could save money in other ways. Graffiti removal costs quite a bit of money, time and effort, and doesn't make the trains any faster.
I used to ride the express bus when I lived in Queens. A 45-60 minute commute. The next best thing was a 40 minute bus ride followed by a 50 minute subway ride.
UnrepentantFenian you must be a transplant. Queens has many areas that lack public transportation. Most areas not close to the ferry on Staten Island rely on Express Bus service. The Bronx and parts of Brooklyn rely on it too. The service exists because it's necessary. Make it unaffordable and then you'll have the return of gypsy dollar vans in many areas and more people carpooling it on the road or driving to public transportation stops, creating even more traffic.
If it helps keep that many people off of the roads and out of the subway cars, then I'd like to see future Obama-dollars expand Express Bus service as well as retrofitting them with cameras, traffic signal changers, and give them fenced-off right-of-ways.
I hate these blogs because people are so opinionated and have no idea what in the world they are talking about resorting to sarcasm and profanity.
UnrepentantFenian... you are an idiot.
Express buses are an excuse for people who refuse to take LIRR. Filled with nothing but senior citizens from the suburban NYC retirement homes.
Then again, their soft seats are to die for rather than your ass going number after 30 mins on a local bus, and 40 minutes on a subway. The seats are really worth the $5.

I wish I had an excuse to refuse to take LIRR!! :D
