Stabbing at Brooklyn Public School

Yesterday afternoon, a 16-year-old boy was stabbed by another student on the third floor of I.S. 49, which is on Graham Avenue in Williamsburg. The school was on lockdown for over 2 hours and a suspect was arrested. NY1 reports, "After parents were allowed to pick up their children, they still remained concerned about their long-term safety in the school, claiming that the school lacks basic security measures like metal detectors." However, the school tried to reassure them, with a letter stating, "I want to assure you that this was an isolated incident. Fights and altercations of similar nature rarely occur." The victim, who attends the Green School for Environmental Careers located inside I.S. 49, is in stable condition at Bellevue.

no.no and no. perhaps all of the above but in the dominate society you have a more complex and elaborately disseminated secular and religious ethical discourse. not just thru intellectual reflection but.. yes role models in the adult environment. it's not perfect but it has better statistical success than in the communities of urban black poor.

I forgot, which mechanism was it exactly that instills individual ethical judgment and restraint? Religion? The ghetto certainly has plenty of that so that can't be it. I'm thinking you're talking about role models, or a stable and protective environment... or oh I know, I bet you're talking about money! Yes that has to be it. When you have money you can just pay other people to do the dirty work.

Exactly, it's not just parenting per se, it's a culture with a weak mechanism for instilling individual ethical judgement and restraint.

Isn't it depressing that folks consider "basic security measures" in a school to include metal detectors? When did that become basic? When was did the presupposition that so many pieces of trash would be bringing weapons with them begin? It wasn't basic where and when I was in middle and high school. It isn't basic in the school my child attends. Yes, it is an independent school. Does this mean that the public schools in NYC are lost, game over?

This is about failed parenting, time and time again. Mom and dad, you're not doing your job. It's unfortunate that people herein make distinctions along racial lines. It's unfortunate that there appears to be a correlation, but it's spurious. This isn't about race. Look at Columbine. This is about parents who simply can't and don't do their jobs.

The purpose of culture is the production and reproduction of a "type". A "people" is analagous to a laboratory. In all labs there a "failures" but nevertheless a "type" is aimed at. White, dominate society aims at a standard in personal behaviour, productivity and self-discipline. It's not that black culture aims at creating criminals (hip hop culture not withstanding) but the well articulated components of ethics, industry and civility are LACKING. You don't see the evil genius like you do in the movies, who KNOWS he is evil. You see people who just don't know right from wrong.
