Real World Cast Shares First Impressions of NYC

Yesterday we got a sneak peek into the Real World Brooklyn house out in Red Hook as well as introductions to each of the eight new cast members. As we mentioned, there were allusions to half the cast sticking around town (possibly for some sort of spin-off) in the Lower East Side and/or Stuy Town, using the Big Apple to springboard their careers.

The foursome include Chet (who is allegedly on his own in the UWS). Next up is Devyn, a former teen beauty queen who wants to act and sing, and who didn't paint a very pretty picture of Red Hook. "Are you kidding me? I have sat on a street corner more times here than I have in my entire life. Car services do not drive here. You call one and they think they're gonna get shot and drive off. Some undercover cop stopped me and was like, 'You will get killed or raped--no joke.' I started crying when they started telling me about all of the crack houses around here."

Surely other boroughs and neighborhoods won her over, right? "The Queens looks like rundown suburbia--like it's where all the houses are, but they're all really, really old...Obviously Manhattan is a variety of buildings that are all tall or whatever but it's the hustle and the bustle. Brooklyn's more quaint, homey--not too suburban. You don't see a lot of houses, you see a more brownstones. And then the Bronx just looks like a bunch of project housing for the most part. But then in another part, there's a lot of duplexes. It's weird how they're all so different."

Next up is Baya, a 21-year-old from Salt Lake City, who told us her months as a Real World-er has led to a weekly residence DJing Tuesday nights at Angels and Kings. When she declared she loves to spin hip-hop, she further explained, "Well, I just got introduced to it coming to New York. I didn't expect to move out here and do that and then somebody brought it up and I was like 'Wait a second, I always wanted to DJ, but I never had the chance.'"

The muscleman Scott from New Hampshire was using the show to pusue modeling and acting, and rounds out the group sticking around. He told us, "Becoming an actor, I don't wanna get typecast in a specific role. While in the show, I'm being typecast as myself, which I think is the best way to get typecasted. Cause they'll know who you are when you walk in. 'Oh yeah, I remember seeing that guy on The Real World. He was nice and he helped his roommates out and he got involved with good organizations. Maybe we should hire him. Maybe we should work with him." When we asked what his next big goal was, he said, "To be Captain America."

Where do NYC's newest additions like to take a break from networking? Elmo's and Creperie were two of the agreed upon favorite restaurants of the cast. For bars they like to hit Sunny's in Red Hook, Public Assembly in Williamsburg and Libation on the LES. JD the dolphin trainer said he loved going to Splash in Chelsea (naturally). He even wrangled the whole cast out one night and proudly described it thus: "Mormon...on the dance floor...at a gay bar."

People still watch this show?

fuck. this. retarded. shit.

Embarrassingly repetitive too it seems...

AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRRRRRRRGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHH.

Aww MTV is not culturally significant anymore. how sad. its a Hot Topic in suburban Indianapolis now.

holy crap!! AGAIN WITH THIS CRAP?

It's sooo unrepresentative of reality.
where is:
1. The Bay Ridge Italian
2. Bed Stuy Homegirl
3. Latino Southside W'burger
4. Skinny white W'burg Northsider
5. Gay Twink
etc

Why would an undercover cop, whose job it is to completely blend in with and gain the trust of intelligent organized criminals, risk blowing his cover by telling some woman on a street cover about his operation?

Does she not know the difference between Donnie Brasco and a plainclothes officer in an unmarked car?

billy parker! shame on you for not mentioning how the tranny is batshit crazy and called you a douchebag in her livejournal. for, you know, not mentioning her at all in your article i guess? thank god gawker's covering it.

I shouldn't have read this post. It upset me.

Wow! Red Hook is Scary! Queens is Drab and Architecturally Undistinguished!

And I should give a husky fuck about their opinions . . . because?

Where exactly is "The Queens"?

Who give a sh*t about MTV and the real world?
Seriously, the only thing worth reading in this 'article' is the comments - especially #13!

I don't know what's the lamer, the show or all the miserable weenies on here making fun of it. Go back to your cube now, you're dismissed.

Hey billybob, go shit in your fist and squeeze

Gothamist, why are you providing Viacom with all this free advertising?

I concur with [2]. Fnck. This. Retarded. Shit. Seriously though, why advertise this nonsense?

If I'd known how awful these Real World updates would be, I would never have been so hard on you guys about IKEA. For God's sake, bring us something IKEA. I don't know, tell us about some lamp they just got in that plays Kraftwerk ringtones...

thanks to #13 for leading me to that livejournal. such glorious prose:

"I wish I could unlock my mind, as if it were a European iPhone"

mm. so deep.

Complaining about the vapidness of the Real World or modern-day MTV is like complaining that Mexican food is spicy.
