Jets Team Captain Charged with Pot Possession

2008_12_ellis.jpgShaun Ellis, a Jets defensive end, was stopped by police in NJ last weekend and eventually charged with "possession of marijuana, driving without insurance and speeding after a highway traffic stop." Ellis was stopped because he, as the Daily Record reports, "allegedly approached a police car from behind at high speed on Route 287 south, pulled even and briefly slowed down, then passed the police car and exited onto Route 24." When the cop pulled him over, Ellis was "uncooperative" and eventually some pot was found in the car. Ellis, who is expected to play on Sunday, issued a statement, "I apologize to my family, the fans and the organization. As a captain, I set a poor example for my teammates as well as all NFL players. Although this is a pending legal matter, I understand that I have to be responsible for my actions." Well, it's not shooting yourself in the leg, is it?

This overpaid asshole is setting a great example for all the kids out there ! but that's okay we will allow it because all the sports geeks that pay $100.00 a seat would rather be in first place then care about that !

  • The Edge

#11- Yeah, because the captain of a NY football team has absolutely nothing to do with a NYC-centric newsblog.

#3, Ricky Williams was a repeat offender.

Since this is ellis's first offense, he won't get a suspension.

he has to enroll in the league's substance abuse program.

oh, them high times. never understood why alcohol was legalized but not marijuana. smokers just want to love and chill, unlike drinkers who just want to brawl and rape.

  • NannyState

Wrong side of the GW for that shit, buster.

  • MrManhattan

It seems that the Gothamist is turning into the East Rutherford, New Jersey Police Blotter.

Legalizing pot sales would generate enough cash to build a new 2nd ave line, close the MTA's budget deficit and fix all our bridges rendering congestion pricing unnecessary.

  • Huffy6241

Congestion pricing would reduce traffic - thus reduce traffic stops - thus reducing cops finding people's stash.

    MORE BICYCLES!!!!

  • SP

    Legalize it.

  • Dirk

Another story about a jock acting stupidly... what a shocker!

  • mrguy

it's preposterous that pot is still illegal. at least voters in massachusetts showed a little bit of sanity in decriminalizing it.

The driving makes me more annoyed than the weed. Actually I could care less about the weed, driving like a tool, speeding past a cop! must have been some chronic!

  • r1b2

The pot is unfortunate, the poor driving is unfortunate. That he was so stupid he drove around with pot is unfortunate.

That said, how is this dipshit driving around uninsured? Doesn't he have people who take care of the little details for him? He has handlers, he has assistants, yes? What a moron.

The NFL has a zero tolerance policy on Pot. Look at what Ricky Williams went through. He'll probably be suspended for a few games and fined. I think the rule is a little harsh but since they're paying these athletes millions of dollars to stay in shape, drugs are a liability and the team can cut you loose if you run afoul of those rules.

But then again, I don't believe pot is that big a deal.... Its not like its Coke or H.

The weed also shot Ellis in the leg when it fell down his sweatpants.

  • ChampionOfTheSun

Legalize weed being sold through pharmacies, and then tax it. NYC budget deficit solved.
