A mostly vegetarian take-out restaurant named Salud—specializing in fresh juices, soups-from-scratch, and sandwiches—is now open in Midwood. Owner Eduardo Larios (an Art Director during the week) and family opened up the small shop a few weeks ago on a mostly gloomy dead end stretch of Avenue H, just off Coney Island Avenue, and Salud has quickly become one of the neighborhood's brightest spots.
Larios and family serve thoughtful, if not standard-issue fresh juice blends bearing cute names (You Got The Beet; Gowanus Green), and there’s a pass-through soup station window at the back of the shop that allows a view of Salud’s tiny kitchen—soups are $3.95 and the menu changes often. Peanut butter and jelly that are featured in the sandwich bearing the same name are made in-house (with apple and banana, $2.95). Salud’s menu likely also marks the very first-ever appearance of a BLT made with tofu bacon ($5.95) on a Flatbush-Midwood area restaurant menu.
Larios also imports organic cacao beans and pulverizes them with a proprietary blend of spices to make Mexican Hot Chocolate. With the addition of steamed organic milk (but also available with soy), the Starbucks-beating price tag of $2.25 buys you one of the best hot chocolates your likely to find in Brooklyn, period: Salud’s brew is subtly spicy, redolent of cinnamon and vanilla. And $10 buys a big box of the mix to take home for making your own. [via Flatbush Vegan]

If they'd put a menu in the window I'd be a little less nervous about going in.
I located a menu on a link - http://flatbushpigeon.blogspot.com/2008/11/salute-salud.html
Seems interesting and not too far away from me. Thanks for the heads up.
This is very close to the Kent movie theater. I noticed it last time I went to the movies, but didn't get anything. They did have customers. Nice decor.
Aww hell. I was really starting to enjoy the obscurity there. Now all kinds of blog-trolling jerks are going to start showing up. Stay out of my neighborhood, internet.
Aw hell - do I eat here or DiFara's?!?
I stopped by SALUD on Avenue H after reading and hearing all these great things about this new organic juice bar. I was happily impressed. I had their homemade Mexican Hot Chocolate and it was delightful. A nice blend of chocolate, cinnamon and almonds. I also enjoyed their super fresh "Winter Squash" soup which was full of flavor.
Spoke with the owner, Eddie, and he told me he's going for a "Latin take on Organic Goodness." Nice! Exactly what this neighborhood need.
5 STARS!*****
Truly a UNIQUE place! Definitely recommend this juice joint!
I'm a newly converting vegetarian (hence my user name, ah thank you!) attending Brooklyn College and I must say that "Salud" had made my transition so much easier. I try to head over there between classes to enjoy their organic soups. I love their sweet potato and kale soup. Yum! And I've also convinced myself that an organic smoothie a day might keep the doctor away. So I always pick up a signature "Salud" smoothie called "YOU A BERRY NICE." Haha love the names! I'm also dying to try the "NO FLU FOR YOU!" Especially since I have some papers to write in a few weeks. Good to know I can enjoy a delicious healthy juice instead of terrifying flu shot!
And did I mention it's just a hop, skip and a jump away from BC, along Avenue H (at Argyle). 1308 Avenue H, to be exact.
Def a must-visit!!
I tried SALUD last week and it was AMAZING!! It's vegetarian friendly but it's also has some delicious goodies for the rest of us. I ordered SALUD's organic chicken soup and it was very tasty. I also ordered the Chicken Torta. A hearty chicken sandwich with beans, chipotle and avocado.
SALUD has arrived. Beautiful Decor and delightful homemade treats!
A welcomed addition to the neighborhood.
Best of luck gang at SALUD!
Salud is hop, skip and jump away from Park Slope.
If you like the prices at Salud, there is a super value health food store called "new york naturals" in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Their prices are way lower than the other health food stores in Brooklyn! On a day you can't stand on the super long line at the food coop, newyorknaturals.com on 6th avenue and Flatbush is the Sudal of Park Slope.
SO CLOSE, SO FARAWAY.
That's how I feel about this little hidden TREASURE named SALUD. I live up in Park Slope but after reading the great review on GOTHAMIST, I decided to visit SALUD. Besides, I've always wanted to check out Midwood (beautiful neighborhood btw). SALUD was so cute and delightful! I was in awe walking into such a cool looking place. The decor is AMAZING. The place should be on http://www.designspongeonline.com/
But I was most impressed by the food! It was like "healthy organic Mexican." I loved it! It was light and tasty. I def recommend this place. WORTH THE TRIP.
TWO THUMBS UP!
THANK YOU GOTHAMIST for letting us know about this cute little place. This was a great find! Gothamist fans should definitely check this place out.
SALUD! SALUD! SALUD! YES! YES! YES!
I read a great review about Salud on FlatbushVegan.com and am so psyched that Gothamist.com made the trip over to Midwood! Salud is such a special place. A Latin take on Organic, you say?? YES, sign me up!!
I decided to check this place out after reading all the great reviews about their homemade Mexican hot chocolate. It truly DIDN'T disappoint! It was full of flavor! A refreshing change to lackluster "cocoa formulas" at Starbucks. A great prices too!
The owner Eddie (an art director at ELLE magazine by day) was super nice and cute. He shared news on how it was a family-run business and how it evolved. Such a fascinating tale. You can tell they're having a lot of fun over there.
This place is pure GOLD. Food and drink galore. You guys should visit this place if you LOVE HOT CHOCOLATE.
I finally made it out to SALUD and it was everything I read about and MORE!!
Their Mexican Hot Chocolate is the BEST I've ever tasted! I also tried their amazing Caldo de Pollo (Mexican chicken soup).
This place is WONDERFUL.
GREAT FOOD & DRINKS plus BEAUTIFUL DECOR!!
And a smart, friendly staff.
TWO THUMBS UP!!
Def worth a visit (you'll probably see me there!)
