Granny Muggers Flee from Crime and Hail... Undercover Cop Car

2008_12_livcab.jpgBad story with good ending: WABC 7 reports that two men who "beat and robbed a 70-year-old woman were arrested after they mistook an undercover police car for a livery cab and tried to hail it to flee the scene." Really! Apparently the men had attacked the elderly woman in a Bronx apartment building on Tuesday, after kicking her and stealing her wallet. They ran out to the street and "noticed a light blue car and thought it was a livery cab, so they stopped, breathless on the street, and tried to hail it." But inside were undercover cops, who asked the two muggers for ID. And one of the men came up with the mugging victim's ID--then claiming he picked it up off the sidewalk. It gets better, too: They were arrested when the victim was being transported on a stretcher by EMT workers-- "The ambulance stopped near the car, and the woman identified the suspects."

Wow, there should be an award for these kinds of blatantly stupid AND unlucky events. Maybe the Plaxico Burres Golden Sweatpants Award or something?

Anybody have a spare baton or walkie talkie antenna I can borrow?

The lesson here is to always have an escape route and a means of escape. What a bunch of morons...

A cops dream - making a collar without leaving the car!

Did the perps bring donuts?

The cops should be promoted given their valor and quick thinking. Either that or time off for recovering from stress due to their harrowing experience.

What kind of savage would attack and rob old women?

Dumb and Dumber, Part Deux.

Note to muggers: if the Crown Vic you're flagging down has two white guys in the front seat, it's not a cab.

"Darwin at his best."

They didn't die.

Which is why I suggested a Golden Sweatpants Award instead of a Darwin Award...

It really took two of these animals to take down a 70 year old woman? So sad, I maybe we should make some exceptions for waterboarding.

"Realizing their mistake, the two muggers bailed out of the undercover police car, jumped into the East River, and swam to an island near LaGuardia. 'I have a brother that lives there,' one of the perps later explained,'it seemed like a real secure apartment building to lay low for a while.'"
