With police looking for the shooter who killed a 14-year-old in Bedford-Stuyvesant Tuesday night, his family and friends begged the community for answers. Apparently Mario Smith (also referred to as Mario Avilaz) was caught in the gunfire after a someone fired "in response to" an argument between two women. A friend said, "If you know something say something, and let's get to the bottom of this," and community activist Anthony Herbert said, "Let's go and eradicate this crime out of our community. That's the only way that it's going to get done. It can't get done by the NYPD by themselves, it's not going to get done by Mayor [Michael] Bloomberg or the governor. It's going to be done by us in the community, standing together, and making a change."

They will find the people responsible, and I hope they stew in jail for a long time.
#1, I doubt it. Remember, no snitchin'.
@Rocknrope:
Are you so sure that if your life and the lives of your family members were threatened interminably by criminals who are your neighbors, that you would be so willing to do the right thing?
Everyone loves "The Sopranos" and "Goodfellas" and the innumerable examples of castigating "rats" and "snitches" in our culture, yet somehow when it comes to people of color, it's a character flaw to fear swift and sure reprisal for talking to police.
According to the NYT, police already have a suspect they are looking for. With all the witnesses to the shooting, someone will come forward.
Matukonyc... in the case of Goodfellas and The Sopranos and things like that you're talking about criminals snitching on each other and the principle of honor among thieves. You create a world/premise and then how things operate within that world. They're bad people in the first place so i don't think people are worried about them all of a sudden becoming angels and going over the police.
You make a good point though that retribution in cases like this is scary and shitty... The city has to think of ways to combat this. And yes it takes some serious brass ones to risk yourself like that, but I think there comes a point where SOMEBODY has to put it on the line or things will never change... because really, is there any doubt here what the RIGHT thing to do is? In the end you MUST agree that to "Snitch" in this case is needed?
we're talking about an innocent kid cut down for no good reason (not that there ever is a good reason), not some movie.
