Plaxico Burress Suspended for Rest of Season

In the wake of his accidental self-shooting, the NY Post reports that the Giants placed Plaxico Burress "on the reserve/non-football injury list, which ends his season and likely means he's played his last game for the Giants. In addition, the team fined Burress and suspended him for four games for conduct detrimental to the team, citing multiple and repeated violations of club rules."

"I guess suspending him repeatedly and then now, firing him for the rest of the season is the answer for them.... I don't agree with treating the man like a child, but seriously..."

Seriously... what? What is the answer? Ater the most recent of several suspensions/finings, it was clear that he had no intention of changing anything about how he approached life or his relationship with the team; he saw no reason to apologize to anyone and essentially said he'd do exactly the same thing again.

This action wasn't taken immediately upon news of his shooting, but after meeting with him at Giants Stadium. We don't know what was said at that meeting, but the only reason to have one would be to give him a chance to explain himself and hear where he thinks his future with the team might bring him. Out of that meeting, the people who were there decided that having one of the league's most talented receivers wasn't worth it.

So what should they have done in not treating him "like a child?" One more, one more, one more, one more chance? Oh no, you argued against the repeated suspensions, too. Uh... have him committed for psychiatric treatment against his will?

No suspensions, no firings... OK, what's the answer? A raise?

  • hungryghoast

Miz Coaster... Perhaps the previous suspensions were the organization's attempt to send Plax a message that he needs to act with more maturity and professionalism? I'm not sure what you expected the Giants to do to prevent this, keep him under house arrest? Send a team rep to shadow him everywhere to make sure he didn't get into trouble? now THAT would be treating him like a child... which in hindsight would probably have been the better way to protect their investment...

As it stands, and as other commenters have stated, the guy not only committed a felony but also endangered himself and other teammates which makes him more of a liability than an asset. It's not the end of the guy's career, he'll play somewhere else, but if he's going to be as much a nuisance as he's been this season, then the Giants can do better things with that $.

    Boogie nights!!!

The Doctor at New York Hospital was suspended

last night for not reporting the gunshot to the

    cops. Dr.Who?

I still think there is more to thi$.

This is a shame - the Giant's organization really sees this guy as a lost soul? I think this situation also speaks for the Giants. This guy is in trouble all the time, and they really did nothing about it, so when news came he shot himself, I wasnt really surprised.

Plax hung himself on this one, and I agree he is a total idiot... But the Giants themselves handing him the rope and knotting it for him is almost as equally shameful. I mean, this guy had the WINNING catch (correct me if I am wrong) for chrissakes in the superbowl... the giant's just watch him flounder? They don't see a nugget of talent in there somewhere? are they not interested in protecting their investment? I guess suspending him repeatedly and then now, firing him for the rest of the season is the answer for them.... I don't agree with treating the man like a child, but seriously...

I think that if my mom named me Plaxico I would carry a gun too

  • emilydickinson

I agree, if you're that worried about your safety hire a professional driver/guard, which will keep you out of trouble and also prevent DUI's.

  • Felix Hoenikker

    14.

    Exactly. Or hire muscle.

Or learn not to keep one in the chamber.

  • r1b2

    Full stop.

  • jaycjay

Just have to add this: look, if for some reason you think you have to carry a handgun, put the damn safety on.

And, you're a multimillionaire. Why are you sticking your gun into the waistband of your sweatpants like a street thug? Dude, you can get a decent concealment holster for like $30 or $40, or even something really sweet and impressive for under $100. You can afford it!

  • jaycjay

    "Is that fair?"

What could possibly be unfair about it? The player, under a multi-million dollar contract, injured himself through his own negligence. He committed a felony, which is a violation under the NFL/NFLPA basic agreement. His behavior also put at risk other players under contract to the team, as well as the public. Besides this most recent incident, he's committed "multiple and repeated violations of club rules," as anyone who's followed the team is well aware.

And as has been made clear in the games he's already missed this season, the team doesn't need him.

Good move. Free up that $7 million or so a year to spend on a player or players who not only might help the team, but won't hurt it.

  • best news all day.

  • MrManhattan

I thought this was the Gothamist.

Whats with the East Rutherford New Jersey fixation?

  • widefive

He had a handgun illegally in a Manhattan nightclub and didn't know how to handle it safely. He's lucky the bullet hit only him.

  • blablanyc

The Giants did the right thing. It's a shame for the Giants to lose a player of Plexiglass' caliber. What a dummy.

  • west side Michael

Me thinks he was suspended cause

if on the field someone is sure to

tackle him and when they do

    they

do not want him reaching down his

pants, pulling out a gun and shooting

    the sucker.

I guess in this case the punishment

fits the crime and we do not know yet

how much more is in this story

    which the Giants management

may be aware of i.e.the cover up and possible bribe to

the hospital employees to shut up also

was the gun even registered in Florida or

    was it stolen?

In any event this guy's antics is costing our

NYPD money and time away from more

    serious issues.

The only one to make out well here are

the lawyer mouthpieces ,as is usual.

I expect that Plax will voluntarily be

in some kind of mental health treatment

program to make this start to look right.

  • rosweed

    Fucking idiot. Good riddance.

  • NannyState

^ What career end? He just won't play for the Giants anymore. If you like the dumbfuck so much, move to Oakland, his next and spiritual home and enjoy his antics there.

  • Jen S

I"m super disappointed with him, but I wouldn't wish him this. He needs to be punished, definitely, for being a bad role model and disgracing the team. I hope he can stay with the team, or at least stay in the NFL.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

for shooting himself? End of his career for shooting himself? I don't think that is fair. What would be crazy if Vick is allowed on the field again. Vick should never played again.

  • ides_of_march

Another moron makes it to easy street then tosses himself back in the gutter.

The guy may know how to run and catch a ball but he sure doesn't have a functioning brain cell.

  • SP

Absolutely. Usually teams have a laissez-faire attitude, allowing their players to do whatever the fuck they want to. I'm very happy they did this. Good riddance.

  • Mr Mel

    Is that fair?
