Mets: New Stadium is Staying "Citi Field"

The Mets offered a tour of their new under-construction stadium today and COO Jeff Wilpon dashed the hopes of those wishing the stadium would be named Citi/Taxpayer Field. Wilpon referred to Citigroup, the troubled bank which is paying $20 million/year for 20 years for naming rights, "We think we can bring the right people to help them market their product so that they can be a going concern. It's not really Citi's fault that they're in this problem. They're a lot of other banks in the same situation."

Bats Blog reports that "David Wright, Nick Evans and Daniel Murphy took batting practice not long after the season ended, before the grass was installed, and that they seemed pleased with the park’s dimensions and how the ball carried. The 16-foot wall in left field makes it a little difficult to pull home runs back, but the fence is noticeably lower in center (maybe 12 feet or so) and even lower in right."

And of course, if you happen to be a Citi cardholder, depositor or borrower you are invited to share their luxury suites anytime you're in town.

No, of course it's not Citi's fault the situation they're in. It's always someone else's fault. Everyone has an excuse. I hope the Mets come in last place.

After looking at that rotunda shot, I forsee a couple more "Drunk falls off escalator at Shea" incidents.

Why are stadia here so fugly?!? It's a NEW stadium for god's sake!

#1: jen chung has major grammar issues.

#2: the romans and the jewish slaves built the colliseum and we still go today. why do both teams have to waste money on another venue? our kids are barely getting an education in new york city. where are our priorities?

Citigroup is dropping $10 billion on Spain's Itinere. Not bad use of the $45 billion in taxpayer money. Citi should be selling off assets and downsizing rather than taking on more debt and risks. Crikey.

Shea needed to be replaced. The stadium was horribly tacky and stuck in a 70's timewarp. Citifield is a great improvement.

Unfortunately it gives them an excuse to jack up ticket prices.

It's not really Citi's fault? Then who's fault is it? This guy is a major asshat. Why are the Mets even allowing him to open his mouth on media outlets?

OK, Really,

This moron thinks a sports team can generate enough business to save a multinational conglomerate in as much trouble as CitiCorp???

Really?

Clearly he doesn't remember Enron, and their field, (yes #8 it was in Houston. Now I think its Minute Maid field.)

I'm just happy he working for a baseball team. At least he can't do any damage to the economy. #12, would you prefer he were in banking or automobiles? (OK, bad examples!)

Fuck sports franchises AND banks that mooch off the taxpayers. Change the name to 'Citisucks Field'.
