Plaxico Heads to Giants Stadium, Hospital Under Fire

2008_12_plaxco03.jpg

Plaxico Burress is at Giants Stadium to meet with team officials for the first time since he accidentally shot himself in the thigh. And the NYPD is investigating why NewYork-Presbyterian/Weill Cornell, which treated the Giants star, did not report the shooting to the police. According to the NY Times, state law requires hospitals or doctors to contact the authorities "at once."

The NYPD's chief spokesman Paul Browne said that when police arrived on Saturday (90 minutes after Burress checked out), a hospital administrator tried to cite a privacy statute as why the police weren't called, "They initially cited a statute that does not apply in trying to resist releasing information. But they were persuaded otherwise.” (Burress had allegedly first gone to the hospital under an assumed name, but was recognized.) The hospital admitted it was against procedures not to contact the police, and added that the person who failed to do so was suspended.

Mayor Bloomberg sounded off about the hospital's actions as well as on Burress yesterday, "Our children are getting killed with guns in the street. Our police are getting killed. I think it would be an outrage if we didn't prosecute to the fullest extent of the law." The Daily Show also took time to discuss the matter:

(To be fair, the Mumbai terror attacks occurred last week, and the Post and Daily News did feature them on their covers.)

Burress was arraigned yesterday on felony gun charges and released on $100,000 bail. The Post reports that cops are also annoyed that Antonio Pierce, who was with Burress at the time of the shooting (the pair were at the LQ nightclub in midtown), did not meet with them, yet kept up his radio appearance on WFAN. Pierce--as well as Ahmad Bradshaw--are also at Giants Stadium now, according to NJ.com, which writes, "Perhaps the three players, who were all at the Latin Quarter Friday night, are here together to meet with team and league officials. But several other players have been at the stadium this morning, so we can't say for sure."

#14- so you want the same type of dudes at the walmart stampede to police themselves with gun safety?

  • getserious

nightclubs in israel and south africa have gun checks just like a coatcheck...

theres a great scene in firefly where they had to check their guns, its not an outlandish scifi idea...

    his actions are stupidity,

gun safety means, no chambered rounds, and safety always on, the waistband tuck is also a dumb move...

i say guns for the law abiding public with mandatory safety training

  • babyhitler

how many immigrants in vermont? exactly.

  • babyhitler

getserious - I'm sure you'd be singing a different tune if you were at the nightclub and the loaded gun with safety off shot you in the stomache instead of plaxico's thigh when it fell from his sweatpants waistband.

Seriously, he was stupid. It ends there. Sending him to jail for multiple years is just plain taking advantage of the situation. It's not like he bought the gun on the street and shot up an alley: he had an expired permit in another state and accidentally shot himself. No one but him got hurt and he's manning up and turning himself in rather than running and being like "well, what had happened was..."

He's a stupid fuck but stop wasting our papers and police trying to send him away for years for stupidity. To be fair, 170+ die in India and we've devoted 3 days of headlines to a fucking moron.

getserious: You make a good point, but I don't see how they are relevant to this story at all. Plaxico Burress is a rich guy who DID NOT have a gun permit.

  • Quidnam

Agreed, getserious. They should prosecute gun crimes to be sure, but it is no less important or urgent for the city to reform the permitting process to make it less onerous for responsible citizens to exercise their right to self-defense.

Some of us own handguns for protection. Others like to hunt with them. Still others enjoy participating in shooting competitions.

But if you’re Martha Stewart’s daughter, Alexis, you own a pistol in order to shoot your dogs in the head

She applied for a gun license after 9/11 so she could euthanize her beloved pets if disaster struck and she had to leave them behind.

This is in New York City. Yes, that New York City.

If the desire to whack your dogs is justification enough to have a gun in the home, what would the police say to someone who wanted to carry a handgun in order to protect and save their life?

    Photographer Irving Elkin requested and

received a permit on the grounds that he carries "money and expensive

cameras." Bill Cosby was issued a permit in 1988 after stating that

he and members of his family had been the object of unspecified

death threats. Donald Trump and radio host Howard Stern also cited

death threats. "Threats, as ever," wrote the conservative journalist

William F. Buckley Jr. on this application for renewal of his permit.

Porn mogul Al Goldstein, the editor and publisher of Screw Magazine

and producer of the late-night cable show "Midnight Blue," has been

trying to get on the "gun carry" list since 1978, the year Hustler

Magazine publisher Larry Flint was crippled by an assailant's bullet.

Following a string of rejected applications, he has taken his case

all the way to the New York State Appeals Court.

Bill Cosby is on the list. Joan Rivers, too. And Donald

Trump, William F. Buckley, Jr., Arthur Ochs Sulzberger and Howard

Stern. There's even a Rockefeller on it - Laurence.

Harry Connick Jr. is not on the list and it cost him a night in

    jail.

The list is of a select group of New Yorkers who have been granted

the privilege of firepower: a permit from the New York Police

Department to carry a concealed weapon when stepping out onto the

    streets of New York City.

The common goal of all gun laws was to keep guns out of the hands of minority races and immigrants while allowing free access for established white citizens. This concept of legalized discrimination still exists in several states that have not reformed their gun permit laws.

According to information obtained through leaks and the Freedom of Information Act, many NYC permitees are celebrities and political cronies. The last time information was released, celebrity permit holders included William F. Buckley Jr., Donald Trump, Joan Rivers, a member of the Rockefeller family and Arthur Sulzberger, publisher of the rabidly anti-gun New York Times.

Another over-represented group included those with crime connections. According to the Village Voice: "Other licensees include an aide to a city councilman widely regarded as corrupt, several major slumlords, a Teamsters Union boss who is a defendant in a major racketeering suit, and a restaurateur identified with organized crime."

In New York City, only the wealthy have the right to armed self-defense.

Contrary to the shrill scare tactics of the anti-gun lobby and some self-serving law enforcement agencies, blood did not run in the streets and people did not suddenly begin to murder each other over minor disputes. Violent crime, in fact, decreases when shall-issue laws are enacted.

Peaceful Vermont, perhaps the most enlightened of all, needs no permit system of any kind, since any adult who is not prohibited from owning a firearm may carry it concealed at any time for any lawful purpose.

Discretionary carry laws are a breeding ground for police corruption and an anachronism that should not exist in a society that prides itself on fair and equal treatment for all citizens.

One of your finest sentences yet. Love it.
