Bus Driver Fatally Stabbed by Passenger

2008_12_busstab.jpgA bus driver on the B46 line in Brooklyn died after being stabbed around 12:30 p.m. today. WCBS 2 reports, "Police told CBS 2 HD that a passenger leaving the bus asked for a transfer. The driver refused to give him one. An argument ensued and the suspect pulled out an object and stabbed the driver with it." The driver was taken to Woodhull Hospital, and then transferred to NY Presbyterian, where he died. The suspect is a black male in his late teens; WABC 7 reports that a witness chased him, but lost him.

how many "true new yorker" gothamist readers are now wondering what a "transfer" is?

you get a transfer when boarding a bus.

tug wife my nizzaz wepwesentn duh gwetto. bawwin mah bud twanfas ya hwead son?

Not that i'm excusing the behavior but, if you haven't encountered one of the many Douche Bag bus drivers in Brooklyn, don't judge so quickly. I am a 110lb female, and have a 200+ plus lb male bus driver, stand up and threaten to hit me and throw me off the bus because as packed as it was i was apparently a threat to him by not moving in quicker then i could, THEY ARE THE ANIMALS!

not surprise, my friend drives a bus, the tells me in the ghetto areas more than half the passengers dont pay and have the balls to ask for a transfer.

he never gives them transfers but sometimes people would threaten him for not giving them one.

#7 clearly rides the short bus

Okay so this person gets killed over what amounts to a $2 fare? Disgusting...

He had to get to Wallmart to get a cheap tv.

Savage !

@Nyctini11, I'm sorry if that happened to you, but in my 34 years riding the MTA buses to school etc, I have seen many more passengers causing trouble than drivers. I don't feel sorry for the stabber on the B46. There is no excuse for inflicting bodily harm on someone who simply won't give you a transfer.

In my experiences riding the b60 line (From canarsie, through east new york, brownsville, bushwick, to williamsburg) both the passengers and bus drivers have been nice and respectful to each other, everyone usually says "Thank you" to the bus driver when they leave.

Truly sickening behavior. Happy holidays indeed.

Riding the bus like a civilized human being and not killing anybody gets you no street cred. The guy had no choice. Besides, he was still pissed off about not getting his flat screen TV half price at Wal-Mart on Friday.

I don't really get the "Thank you" to the bus driver thing. As customers, they should thank us!

That said, this is very unfortunate.

notice the section of his route that it occurred? this area is a zoo, this is just the most glaring of a hundred and one daily offenses and outrages that happen for driver's who have to deal with this route. No one wants to admit it but these "types" of peoples are savages. Call it like it is.

@theLtrain...Not to be a pedant but this was the B46, not the B60.

I ride the B46 sometimes and I have to say, most of the interactions are pleasant, but when they are unpleasant they get unpleasant quick.

It wasn'tust over a transfer. It was a transfer that was denied a crazy person. Sympathies to the family of the driver. And a may a relentless manhunt ensue for the animal who did this.

It wasn't just over a transfer. It was a transfer that was denied a crazy person. Sympathies to the family of the driver. And a may a relentless manhunt ensue for the animal who did this.

nooo..you mean it WASN'T just about a transfer?

Thanks for insult #10, much appreciated but, the last time i checked it was a full size bus, i was helmet free, although your ignorance seems to be flowing abundantly! I didn't realize telling my 1 story of many offensive bus drivers i've encountered warranted the accusations but, then again, i'm not surprised, let's all take after you and go around making derogatory accusations of everyone!! In the infamous words of my peer SpeacialEd, YAY!!

Sometimes bus drivers are total douches though. He apparenly paid to get on. So just give a damn transfer. Alot of them have more attitude than a C.O. And thas just on the M23. If you feel tired and ran down by this city. Move the fuck away and stop spreading your contagious attitude on the rest of us.

More fabulous return on our investment in the projects.

not to belittle this sad news, but in Guatemala, there have been almost 150 bus drivers killed this year... aint this a great world we're living in?

#28, if you read the article, he clearly did not pay for his ride.

"Police said the man swiped an invalid fare card and sat down on the bus, then asked for a transfer slip usually available to riders.

Police told CBS 2 HD that when the driver told the man that he didn't pay for the ride"

So yeah...
And really sad news, how lives can be taken over such a little thing is disgusting.

you know, i just... i can't...

this little fuck has the audacity of swiping an empty card, getting a free ride and then he asks for the transfer, well OF COURSE because he is so ENTITLED to it. he doesn't have to pay like the rest of us. and when the driver said no, he STABS him? what the FUCK?

i hope they catch him because this is the type of savage who would attack anyone with the slightest provocation. don't give me shit about him being poor and not being able to afford a fare card. this is tough times for everybody. i don't get a welfare check and sometimes i can't buy a metrocard and then i WALK to where i need to get to. i don't try to get free rides (which is stealing) and then kill people when they try to stop me. if only the terrorists would blow up the projects...

He must have thought that Obama was going to give everybody in the hood free rides on the bus,

no excuses for the stabber; that said, many bus drivers are straight up assholes for no reason. 3 am, when a faulty card machine ate my last fare with the word "error," and no more than 50 cents in my pocket, in a bad neighborhood by myself, a bus driver kicked me off when it was obvious the machine had eaten my fare. a female bus driver would never have done that (and they never have). another time, i needed to catch a bus whose stop was on the corner. the bus was waiting at the red light and i ran up and motioned to please be let on. the driver opens the door, points back ONE FOOT to where the bus stop sign is and says "the stop is back there, you're shit out of luck." i called the MTA to complain, as i had memorized the bus number and route, and the associate on the other end said that the guy should've been more courteous...but i'm sure my complaint did nothing. and i don't yell or holler or bully the drivers into getting my way... so they really should be more accomodating.

Its hit and miss. Some drivers are nuts, or racist. Others wave you through when your card is empty. Its a union job, you get an assortment of individuals, but bad apples can never be fired. Now will we see NYPD Hercules Teams on the B46? Wasn't this a terror attack on public transportation near the holidays?

"pull my finger" loves those racial undertones smh
