Making The Call: Cut Him

2008_11_plax31.jpg

Plaxico Burress is one of the biggest reasons the Giants won the Super Bowl and is one of the best receivers in the NFL. But his antics off the field are no longer worth the trouble. After last season’s Super Bowl victory, the Giants rewarded Burress with a 5-year/$35 million deal and since contracts in the NFL are not guaranteed, they can choose to terminate that deal at any time. That time should come now.

It’s not just the latest incident where he shot himself in the leg; it’s the total package. Since being giving a huge contract, Burress has done nothing but become a distraction for a team trying to repeat as Super Bowl champs. He has missed meetings, been suspended and generally shown that he doesn’t care about his teammates. Why he was in a nightclub less than 48 hours before a game that he was already going to miss with an injured hamstring is a question we will probably never learn the answer to.

Are the Giants a better team with Plaxico in the lineup? Absolutely, but that doesn’t mean they can’t win without him. Plaxico probably didn’t notice, but the Giants won a Super Bowl after Tiki Barber retired and are currently 10-1 after trading Jeremy Shockey. Fifty-two players on the Giants have embraced the “team first” concept of Tom Coughlin. Burress hasn't, and the Giants shouldn’t let him stick around and be a distraction any longer.

The Knicks would love to have the ability to terminate Stephon Marbury’s deal, but they can’t without paying him. The Giants can and they should. Take the money and use it to keep guys like Brandon Jacobs and Derek Ward, players who want to be here and care about the team winning.

Good riddance, seriously. He could have hurt or killed somebody firing a weapon in a crowded club. I hope they get rid of him and pick up somebody good.

He's of no use. Get rid of him.

OK yes Plax did catch the winning TD in the Super Bowl last year, but this year he has been less than stellar. 450+ yd and 5 TD's. Kevin Boss has more TD's. Yes, with Plax on the field there is more than enough attention on him that the others can get open and get some yardage. But check out today's win in Washington...over 300 yds. in the air and no PLAX...eff 'em and send him packing...he's a distraction...maybe like Shockey last year...we will repeat in the winter!!!

He's made it and isn't smart enough to behave.
Drop him like dead weight.

Agreed. The man needs to moor his ego blimp somewhere else.

Marbury hasn't done anything detrimental to his team off the field like Plax has done repeatedly. The Knicks just sucked with him. Can't terminate his contract for that.

Its unfortunate when someone "makes it" but can't seem to shake the ghetto mentality. Oh well... He'll get picked up by someone before the season's out. Unfortunately. He might meet the Giants in the Super Bowl.

Why he was in a nightclub less than 48 hours before a game that he was already going to miss with an injured hamstring is a question we will probably never learn the answer to.

I don't get it. Why is that even a question? He's injured. He won't be playing. Why can't he go enjoy himself at a nightclub? It's not like he needs to be in top condition to sit on the sidelines.

The gun was illegal i.e. stolen or not licensed.
He will appear at the 17th precinct on Monday.
I like the report that the club found the gun on
him, then let him in when Plax "said he needed the gun as he had jewelry and lots of cash on him"
Hmmmm? OK guy go right in and have a few drinks.

Here come the Lawyers.

He made it out of the ghetto. Too bad he brought the ghetto mentality with him.

Jackass.
