Cops on Fatal L.I. Wal-Mart Stampede: "This Crowd Was Out of Control"

The Wal-Mart worker killed during yesterday's morning Black Friday sale stampede at the Valley Stream store was identified as 34-year-old Jdimytai Damour of Jamaica, Queens. Newsday reports that the Wal-Mart entrance doors were broken down by a restless crowd of 2,000 shoppers--many of whom had been waiting for hours--as workers were getting the store ready for the 5 a.m. opening. Damour, a temporary worker hired for the holidays, was pushed to the ground and trampled. Detective Lieutenant Michael Fleming, who is investigating the death, said, "This crowd was out of control," and "They overran him and kept running into the store. They pushed right over his body."

The Post suggests that the crowd became unruly because the store didn't open exactly at 5 a.m., and according to the Daily News, before the opening, "Sensing catastrophe, nervous employees formed a human chain inside the entrance to slow down the mass of shoppers."

Shopper Nakea Augustine, who took photographs of the mass of people, said, "Nobody was trying to help him. They were rushing in the store, rushing, rushing, rushing." A cop said that cops performing CPR on Damour were also stepped on by shoppers. Another shopper said that Wal-Mart employees' pleas to shoppers were ignored, "When they were saying [shoppers] had to leave, that an employee got killed, people were yelling, 'I've been on line since Friday morning!' They kept shopping."

While Wal-Mart called Damour's death a "tragic situation," Local 1500 of the United Food and Commercial Workers had a comment (Wal-Mart does not have union workers). Local 1500 president Bruce Both asked the NY Times, “Where were the safety barriers? Where was security? How did store management not see dangerous numbers of customers barreling down on the store in such an unsafe manner? This is not just tragic; it rises to a level of blatant irresponsibility by Wal-Mart.”

Det. Lt. Fleming also called the chaos "foreseeable." Damour's friends and family told Newsday that he "was an easygoing, helpful man who loved poetry." A friend also said Damour, who had done construction work, "was a big man and had no apparent health problems."

You have put it the best so far on here. Most of these people are being used as pawns in what the media wants to portray to them, then they jump on it like leeches to point fingers and puff out their chest and try and make others feel bad because of their social or racial backgrounds. That's the problem with this world now, people are quick to point the finger instead of finding a solution. Stampededs and Savage actions such as these have happened at numerous events, on numerous ocassions, amongst many different races and social class.

How do we know these people are all on welfare?

How do you know they don't work their fingers to the bone for every dime they can save up to get something nice for themselves for the first time in a long time?

How do you know some of them weren't striving college students, with no vehicle to take them out of their "Ghetto" surroundings?

Some people can't help their living situations that life has dealt, their not Heirest or OffSprings to General Motors and Ford Executives, but because they are currently bound to living in their neighborhood they're all considered Hoodlums?! That's very interesting. I didn't know most of you people on here knew all of those people in the store, their backrounds, their financial situations, living situations.

Don't be a bandwagon jumper, unfortunate events happen to many of people all across this world, so please don't be a pawn to the medias game.

Attention Wal-Mart shoppers. Thank goodness it wasn't K-Mart. Imagine what would have happened when the blue light went on.

This is a tragedy, and a horrible reminder of the base level to which we'll drop to get a bargain.

    A MODEST PROPOSAL

This is how our Founding Fathers or the Puritan folk who brought European society (such as it was) to Long Island would be thinking.

Putting on my 17th and 18th Century hat, this would be my proposal:

    1. The beasts stampeding the entrance remind me of pigs on their way to the slaughterhouse. They should be treated as such as they have forfeited all humanity. Grind their vile wretched bodies and bones up for animal feed!

    2. The racist commentators to this blog should be taken to a pillory in put up in their respective town squares, stripped and flogged till bloody and left out all day for all to see. Vermin like that don't deserve to live. Shame and more shame and imfamy be upon them and their families!

    3. The TOP MANAGEMENT of Walmart, being guilty of MURDER, should be hung by the neck till dead. Those of the management that particular store who tried to control the crowd and who tried to help the unfortunate employee should be shown mercy with only a flogging of 24 lashes and a 6 month prison term at solitary confinement where they will meditate and repent their complicity as passive enablers to a monstrous abomination.

Ah, Ummmm, Jim, Jim? Stop ranting, we know you're pissed as you have a right to be.

    BUT.....

This being the 21st and not the 18th century, I realize that there isn't going to be that kind of harsh Biblical style justice for these THINGS, satisfying as it might sound.

    INSTEAD

I propose that there be a total ban on buying anything from Walmart, Target, K-Mart or other mass marketers this Holiday season. We need to bring their system of greed and exploitation to its knees and destroy it entirely if we are to redeem ourselves and reform as a civil, moral society. I further propose that no Holiday presents be given unless they were either directly produced by the hands of the giver, OR produced by someone the giver knows PERSONALLY.

If there really WAS a Santa Clause, he'd be giving us ALL coal in our stockings. American society and values have lost their humanity.

    Ridiculous...and shameful.

Thanks hungry customers. I wonder what the family of the victim's reaction was.

I haven't read a local headline that made me feel this way in a while.

Thanks for covering it though, Gothamist. People definitely need to see this and I notice the comment storm that it's created too.

There is a dynamic with stampedes where people at the front of the line are pushed from the back and pressured to burst through a door or window. I've seen a bad one first hand and the ones at the front of the line were just standing until the force of the throng made them stampede. The fact that so many people were allowd to crowd the entrance without numbered passes and barricades makes Wal-Mart fully liable for this death. And they are lucky that it was just that one guy.

  • blkiznewprez

On xmas morning, when these savages' children are opening their stupid fucking presents, I hope the ghetto parents say something like: "I hope you like it, because I had to kill a man for it." not that the kids'll care, of course.

  • chris lee

I believe there were more people killed at a Who concert some years back, but as usual this kind of po' folks in the ghetto story is both sides are right and wrong. The truth is that the quality of life around high concentrations of lower class blacks is wanting.

  • Shinobi Shaw

The Ghetto trash are lowlife scum who need to expand their vocabulary an have some sort of a vocation.

Instead they prefer to do THIS, Trassshhh! (yes, emphasis added for effect).

  • thefacts

#48, good research, but it doesn't explain this stampede.

Your cites involved people confined to a

small space FLEEING danger during a panic where there was NO escape.

This current event was shoppers rushing INTO an EMPTY space. They could have stopped or retreated. They were not fleeing harm like the religious pilgrims were, they were going in shopping.

Same with the Combs stampede cited in #44.

matty, the fact that you just called white people "stupid" is racist. i can't believe you went there. that's the only racist comment in this whole thread.

  • Reflect

No one went up there with the intention to kill. They went with the intention to buying into the false notion that material excess will bring you a little more happiness. . Will make someone look up to you or accept you more. This stampede is no different than the religious stampedes in other countries that have killed thousands at at a time. The only difference here- this is Americas religion sadly, and this was a stampede

    List of notable stampedes

1,426 - stampede by pilgrims inside a pedestrian tunnel (Mecca, 1990)

1,400 – 2,000 - Khodynka Tragedy at coronation of Nicholas II, (Moscow, 1896)

953 - Baghdad bridge stampede, (Baghdad, Iraq, 2005) (note: because the stampede was triggered by reports of a bombing, this figure is also included in the higher estimate for casualties of the War in Iraq)[citation needed]

800 - crowd crush at religious festival (Allahabad, India, 1954)

362 - stampede at the stoning of the devil ritual (Mecca, 2006)

340 - Moscow soccer match crush (Moscow, 1982)

270 - stampede at the stoning of the devil ritual (Mecca, 1994)

258 - crowd crush at religious festival (Wai, Maharashtra, India, 2005)

251 - stampede at the stoning of the devil ritual (Mecca, 2004)

224 - 2008 Jodhpur stampede disaster, in Chamunda Devi temple, Rajasthan, India, September 30, 2008

200 - stampede in the central place of Nagpur ( Maharashtra, India,1992 )

  • matty

And lastly, if this whole thread isn't testament to how stupid white people can be I don't know what is.

  • matty

Also there is ONE comment in the thread about skinheads in long island.

Why not spend 90 posts talking about how fucked up that shit is?

  • matty

I love how the same racists who posted 90 comments in the last thread came back to post more racist vitriol. You're not done?

This didn't happen because people were black. It happened because people are fucking stupid. In general. Stupidity spans all races and economic classes. This is just another example.

  • thefacts

Let us recall that Sean Puffy Coombs first received notoriety in 1991 when a concert he promoted at CUNY was oversold and NINE people were crushed to death in the stampede trying to get in.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose

  • raccoon

    This is excellent!

Not a single person posted an ethnic comment. Nobody said anything about "blacks" or "latinos" or been remotely suggestive of racism in their posts here.

It seems that a bunch of minority groups are coming here to cry foul when the ball hasn't even been thrown.

Remember people, words like "The Ghetto" and "Poor People" do not mean "All Those Dirty Blacks". It means "THE GHETTO" and "POOR PEOPLE". There is no racism involved here. Get over it!
