Queens Pups in Need of Dog Run

queensdogrun.jpgWon't anyone in the city throw a dog a bone? First Brooklyn was stingy with their parks, and now canine Queens residents are at odds with human city parks officials! The Daily News reports that Forest Hills pet owners want a dog run at Yellowstone Boulevard and 68th Avenue, but are being told to use the Under Bridge one "that residents call filthy and dangerous" (allegedly guard dogs are brought to exercise there). With over 900 signatures for the proposed run at Yellowstone Park, Queens Parks Commissioner Dorothy Lewandowski is still ignoring the request, "figuring nonstop barking would irk nearby apartment dwellers and that city workers would have to move plants."

Civilized societies allow people with dogs to bring them into parks and run around, off-leash. There are plenty of amenities in city parks that aren't used by everyone. Baseball diamonds and soccer fields and playgrounds are provided without separate admittance fees. "Not on my dime" is a willfully ignorant position to take, but not unexpected on a blog forum riddled with anonymous poster trolls.

I live in Cobble Hill too and I know how tight the parking situation is there (and in many parts of Brooklyn). Often times, you cannot squeeze between two parked cars to get out of harm's way. As you can tell, I have encountered this issue with the old timers in the neighborhood who give me the stink eye when my dog pees on a garbage bag left out on the curb for pick up.(!) It shouldn't be so hard to walk your pet.

As I was writing that i thought it's probably unsafe to walk in the street. I live in Cobble Hill, where the streets are certainly more sedate than in midtown. Owners should at least make the effort to move their dog from the sidewalk to the space between parked cars when it's time to answer nature's call.

With all due respect, suggesting that people walk their dogs on the street is dangerous. If it's not even safe for a cyclist to use a bike lane, why would it be any safer for a person to walk a dog adjacent to oncoming traffic. Especially since dogs can be unpredictable and try to walk in the path of a moving vehicle. That's unrealistic and unreasonable.

The law states that you curb your dog. When you allow your dog to pee on the sidewalk, you ARE being lazy. Why should I have to step over the pee? Why should parents worry about their kids walking or playing on the sidewalk because your dog's pee is there? Why should I confront streams of urine or streaks of turd on the sidewalk during my morning commute? Stop being lazy and walk your dog in the street. Having a dog is a big responsibility; can you handle it?

I'm not a hater. I had dogs as a kid, in the suburbs. I think dogs are swell. Again, a dog in a city is a luxury, one that comes with a price. I don't want to pay any of that price for you.

I'm always amazed by the number of dog haters on Gothamist. If you have been to a dog run, as I have on many occasions, they do not smell rancid or poopish. Overall, the owners at the dog runs are very good about picking up after their dogs. FYI- many people have dogs for companionship having nothing to do with a biological time clock. That's a really absurd statement.

Your kid is capable of using a toilet (i hope), Dogs are not. That is why we allow them to pee on the sidewalk, not because we're lazy or inconsiderate. Do you realize the effort it takes just to teach a dog not to pee inside? Now you expect dog owners to teach them to only pee in designated areas outside? You've obviously never owned a dog before.

Better a dog run than me or my kids having to step in it. We're no longer a hunter/ gatherer society, and dogs are a luxury. You like your dog because it gives you unconditional positive regard. You've realized your biological clock ran down long ago, and you want someone or something to be nice to you. Work is tough and the dog is always happy to see you. I get it, you need something in your life. But your dog is a luxury.

I wish there was a way to connect dog crap on the sidewalk to the owners and then levy huge fines. Dogs aren't the problem here, it's the people. Dogs can pee on the sidewalks and I have to step around it, but if my kid needs to pee I have to scramble to find someplace appropriate. Dog owners are one of the worst things about this city. The rudeness and discourtesy as they leave the mess behind. They walk out of their buildings and down the street to let their dog pee on someone else's stoop.

Anyway, give them dog runs, make them pay some admission or membership fee to cover the cost of keeping it clean and not creating any unsanitary conditions (should tax dollars really be spent maintaining a place for your dog?), let them crap them up, but then enforce any off-leash violations.

Bike lanes are not a luxury. Bikes make this city a better place. The streets, certainly in midtown during the day, should be car-free. You can't seriously be comparing cyclists to dogs?

Oh so you remembered that subway graffiti idiot that should have been aborted. I didn't say he was aborted, I only said that it was an abortion gone wrong.

Now back to the dog story. I like dogs and feel if there are individuals out there that pollute our streets by taking over a car lane so they can pedal their butts in bliss, why can't the million dog owners in the city get an equal shot at using the streets also? How is that hateful? I find it sympathetic.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

snoopy, dog face idiot. You are the same fool who advocate abortion for the subway grafetti kid. Why are you so hateful. Idiot

  • Snoopy

How about closing off parts of the streets like they do for bike lanes and have dog runs? Dogs are people too.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

I wish I could bite that commissioner. Dog run are a nice part of the parks

"Forest Hills pet owners want a dog run at Yellowstone Boulevard and 68th Avenue"

I somehow doubt that any dog run in Queens, even in Forest Hills, will be maintained as well as the ones in the city are.

But hey, if they want a little area if their own that smells like shit that they and their lovable pets can frolic in, be my guest.
