It seems the taxpayer-funded Keyspan park—where baseball games alternate with rock concerts—isn't good enough for borough president Marty Markowitz; he's still pushing for a new taxpayer-funded amphitheater to replace the existing one at Asser Levy Park, to the tune of $64 million. (When originally proposed two years ago, that number was $40 million.) Markowitz says the new 5,000 seat venue, which would replace the current bandshell, "would make our borough a natural stop on the summer concert circuit for entertainers." Gee, wouldn't that be something? According to the Post, Markowitz will fund the project with $54 million from his office's capital improvement funds and $10 million from the mayor's office, but Community Board 13 and the city's Arts Commission have yet to give him a green light.

It makes sense since they do hold a good number of concerts, however the area is quite ghetto and I doubt he'll get any more money to built it in this climate.
Hang on, could the ghastly Mr. Markowitz please learn something from his last attempt to foist an expensive, taxpayer funded venue on Brooklyn before staring on another? Mostly that he should resign forthwith and seek employment somewhere more suited to his skillset. A dishwasher at Junior's, perchance?
I used to really like Marty, but recent lapses in judgement are off-putting. Now may not be the best time to sink money into an unnecessary amphitheater.
more pork?
Why doesn't he pay for it out of the money that Bruce Ratner gave him?
kojak asser levy park is ghetto? Obviously you don't know the area. If you consider Russians and old New York Jews that live around it ghetto so be it. This is a common Coney Island misconception. The projects in Coney Island aren't even in the amusement area or east of it. The projects start at 20th street and west to Sea Gate. Everything else are co-ops.
As for Markowitz this is ridiculous. So take away the free Summer concerts in Asser and replace it with $50 shows? Not to mention taking away a neighborhood park to do it.
