Fears Over 12-Year-Old's Disappearance

2008_11_myspace.jpgA missing 12-year-old's grandparents tell the Daily News that they fear she was "lured into a trap" by someone on MySpace. Apparently Juliana Carrozza claimed she was 17 on her MySpace profile and grandfather Vinny Carrozza, who has custody of Juliana, said, "She went on MySpace a lot, fooling me and my wife. She knew how to delete it without us picking it up. The language on there was disgusting for a 12-year-old. There was guys there, too." Last seen on November 14, she said she was sick and stayed in her room. But neighbors say they saw her go into a black car, possibly a livery cab, which "peeled off about 5:45 p.m. near her home...in Windsor Terrace." The News, which points out how MySpace's user agreement says visitors must be 13, reports the police are investigating; Juliana is listed on the NY State Missing and Exploited Children Clearninghouse.

One must really wonder where all the money goes when it's turned over to the government. This whole thing should have been nipped in the bud about two hours after it was spotted.

We don't need more law enforcement agents, we need a few good ones.

They've gotta be getting the Feds in on this. They should be able to solicit phone and email records to get more information.

Why do the grandparents have custody? I am guessing poor parenting and transfer of custody has led to low self-esteem and any effort to feel worthy, including lying about her age to seem more important. Poor kid would have been fine with better surroundings.

Someone is trying to rebel and look cool to their friends at school that they have a 20 something boyfriend. If you lied about your age, I'm sure you knew what you were doing.

There were a couple girls in my NYC middle school who were dating HS seniors or older, 1/2 of that group of middle school girls got abortions by 18 :-D Parents never knew about the abortions of course (thank you NY State laws), but there was quite a bit of drama, sometimes even cops were called when they decided to leave school early to have a date with their 17-19 something year old BFs. No charges were filed against the BFs, but parents pretty much died when getting the procedural missing child call from the NYPD and school.

STDs, well, nobody every says they got an STD, even to their closest friends. So I can't say anything on that.

I believe that teens should be treated like adults and should be given responsibility, you've been told since you were 5 not to talk to strangers, if you do so, its at your own risk. She might have runaway, gone to hang with the older brother of some friend, or wanted a trip with some secret boyfriend. DN says her grandma says she couldn't have run away, sure......

Why isn't she with her parents but with her grands? Maybe this is a screwed up family, so she did runaway, no parent will admit their child (which is a reflection of themselves) ran away.

If you want to be stupid, you will earn a fine P. H. D. from the School Of Hard Knocks.

12 year old girl wants to pretend to be a 17 year old, she'll learn quickly, or not, to enjoy her childhood. She voluntarily got into a cab, so shes responsible for anything that happens to her, its not like she was grabbed and thrown into a van by some serial killer.

Reading the article in detail, there seems to be no connection to MySpace in this case. Another piece of sensationalism from the DN. Atleast this isn't MWWS, if shes hispanic and not italian, in either case its good shes not a blond.

@#15 Wow...you sound like such an ass.

[15] Living up to your moniker, I see. Leave the kid alone. Like you never made mistakes when you were 12. Hell, you're no rocket scientist even today.

This is just another case--if a bit salacious--of a Darwin Awards winner.

I can hear it now, "Oh grandpa you are so old fashion."

Grandparents have custody? Hmmm. Would like to get a little more background on this situation. Problems at home? Wouldn't be the first time a twelve year old ran away thinking they can deal with the real world.

If the cops thinks it's serious it should be fairly easy to trace.

Not that pointing fingers helps, but why didn't Grandpa unplug the internet? Who was in charge here?

  • JacqueMehoff

seeing her picture in the DN, I sense this may not turn out well. I see lots of crying in her future.

maybe regret. that God Damn Regret.

  • Spirit of 76

Even if she deleted everything on her computer, I'd be willing to bet MySpace has logs of all her activity on their own servers, not to mention the IP addresses of the other parties she contacted. All it should take to get that data is a subpoena.

  • Rocknrope

Unfortunately, I predict that this will end badly.

  • Mr Mel

I think there are ways to bring up history on a computer even if it were erased. It is plausible that the info is still on the hard drive and if the police think this is serious enough it can be done. The reason I say if the police think it's serious enough, I sometimes feel the police make judgements that would be better left to trained psychological professionals.

  • Pull My Finger

I fear this is not going to turn out for the best.

  • Snoopy

she was "lured into a trap"? Huh? She set the trap herself. How was someone on the other side going to know if she was 17 or 12? With her signing and shit I guess she thought she was cool. Hopefully this will turn out with a happy ending, but one never knows.

  • BrooklynBredTom

This is unfortunate and I sincerely hope it ends well, but it's important to remember that, like it's been said already, MySpace cannot be blamed for this. There's only so much they can do, and that's the Agreement that accompanies the blank where you fill in your personal information. in fact, I think MySpace has done the best they can with warnings and cautionary steps, etc. The person at blame is the suspect, assuming there is one, and maybe a hint of blame for the guardians. The word "guardian" is defined as a protector, keeper, and/or defender.

  • VanessaNYC

Sure it's not the fault of MySpace, it's the fault of sick predators. A naive 12-year-old shouldn't be blamed either.

Please enter your birthday into the space below. You must check this box to indicate you are at least 13 years of age. Click "I Agree"

Any child who can add or subtract can come up with the right birthday year to make themselves whatever age they want. My 13 y/o daughter setup a page a few years ago with an 18 y/o birthday. Parents need to monitor their children and take the freaking computer away from them if they can't keep them off it - or else disconnect the internet. It's not that hard to do.

  • junkrabbit

users are at fault here not myspace itself..

  • Yellow Cab NYC

Wow... this is horrible. Myspace is filled with spam and predators, but I think facebook is alot cleaner.
