Rock n' Roll Arrives in SoHo

sohoannexrock.jpgOhio has officially arrived in New York! This summer Mayor Bloomberg announced that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame would open an Annex in SoHo, officially extending the Cleveland museum all the way to Manhattan.

This week the 76 Mercer Street location officially opened to the tune of $9 million. ArtInfo reports that the "25,000-square-foot basement space, focuses on New York rock culture, with a special gallery devoted to local musicians and temporary exhibitions that change biannually. The first show, 'Revolution Rock,' is devoted to The Clash" (from London). The NY Times reports back that "the wooden phone box from CBGB, plastered with decades-old stickers" and "graffitied wall sections from that landmark club, along with two of its loudspeakers and a metal frame for the CBGB & OMFUG awning" are also making a new home at the Annex.

The full shebang will cost you $26, with a full tour running about 90 minutes. Joel Peresman, president of the Hall of Fame Foundation, says "in New York you have to prove yourself, whether you're a sports team or a museum. We have an important story to tell. And you have to have something interesting and compelling; otherwise, New Yorkers are going to blow it off."

Rock and Roll Hall of Fame? Yes. Madonna is so rock and roll. Die in a fire you stupid midwest "institution". In case you're wondering, i mean both Madonna and the RaRHofF.

"a metal frame for the CBGB & OMFUG awning" come on people that is a must see and worth $26 by itself.

Hey, for $26 you can come over to my place and drink out of a wine glass stolen from CBGB.

Oh, and that'll be $ 15.00 more for the wine.

this is what happens when everything becomes overpriced corporate spectacle,

Will they have an Elvis impersonator doing the tour? They must have some kind of theater with a show. I can't imagine people going there and reading caption panels about guitars that were once owned by some one hit wonder bands from the late 70's for ninety minutes.

I'll give it six months before it closes.

ohio was already here, all these rich little midwestern brats that make it possible to charge $26 on a downtown rock museum annex.

  • MrManhattan

At the Hard Rock you at least you get a hamburger for $26.00.

you can get in the one in ohio for free if you're in a band and you give them your cd. wonder if that'll be true here as well.
