PETA's Latest Anti-Carriage Horse Campaign

Baby, it's cold outside...but Kristen Johnston would rather go naked than ride in a horse-drawn carriage. PETA has released the above homage to Lady Godiva in order to take a stance against the cruel business of horse carriages. The ads will debut today in Central Park (with Johnston on hand), and will be running on more than 100 taxi tops in the city. Other celebs supporting the cause are Pink, Alec Baldwin, and Chrissie Hynde. Johnston says:

"The horses go from this horrible job where they're pulling people through the streets of Manhattan all day to this tiny jail cell in this building that's like a cramped parking garage. I'd say to tourists considering coming to New York, there's so much amazing stuff to do here. But please do something else. I hope within the next year that there are no more horse-drawn carriages."
Is that a possibility? New York City councilmember Dan Garodnick's is proposing a bill that will phase out horse-drawn carriages, and will replace them with eco-friendly horseless carriages ("replicas of the classic Ford Model T, evoking the romance and glamour of New York's golden years"). Now, when do we see Alec Baldwin's homage to Bianca Jagger riding bareback in Studio 54?

Just make sure Daniel Radcliffe doesn't see this add.

Only time I went to Nobu she was sitting the table behind me. Hopefully she wasnt eating the fish; that would be cruel.

@2: woman who volunteers her body for a good cause vs. horses forced to march up and down busy city avenues all day... who is being exploited!?

user-pic

second thought from the ad : Kristen, why the long face?

Sexist advertising is sexist advertising.

The means never justify the ends.

Or so all the politically correctoids like PETA are always preaching

I see two horses in this ad

Where'd they dig up Kristen Johnston?

Hmm... Kristen Johnson naked in Central Park today?

I see a long lunch in my immediate future.

Horses and asphalt don't mix. I can't think of something less romantic (but billed as otherwise) than taking a ride on a horse with cars all around. That being said, putting them in central park on closed cobblestone streets ain't bad at all.

My only problem with the horses in carriages around the city is when they are taken outside the Central Park area.

I saw a Horse carriage near the Times Square area and I felt bad for it and it was somewhat cruel.

Keep the horses in Central Park and nearby areas.

the design and typography of this ad is cruel.

WOW, what a bunch of ignorant selfish people on here - commenting on a women's looks.

Horse draw carriages in NYC is just plain cruel punishment to the horses.

Fact: They work 12 hour days and then go back to their tiny jail cell.
Fact: Horses are intelligent and like to run.
Fact: Horse drawn carriages are banned in almost every other major city in the worled.

Check out this website and contact your local representative:

http://www.banhdc.org/

This means of transportation may have been effective in the 1800s,but it certainly does not belong on the congested streets of 21st Century Manhattan.

Stick a bridle in her mouth and hand me the riding crop!

Another never-was celebutard heard from.
NYC carriage horses have more amenity-filled lives than many, many children in this city. This freak should be deeply ashamed of herself for investing time and money and effort "helping" a handful of horses that have shelter, food, vet care, farrier care, grooming, affection, vacations, and retirement.
I should know - I have been in the business for 27 years. I got into the business BECAUSE of my love for horses, and the limited options to working with them in NYC.
We have a wonderful little iconic, family-friendly business that not only makes people happy, but gives a few horses a place in this world at a time when thousands of horses acorss the country are being abandoned and/or sent to slaughter. The combination of high hay/oats prices and a devastated economy has created a crisis of epic proportions - don't take my word for it, Google it.
Our horses are fit and content, doing what they were born and bred to do. Horses have worked in urban areas ever since there WERE urban areas, it works no hardship on them.
People need to stop projecting their own feelings onto animals and hold off on the anthropomorphism if they are ever to see animals for who they are truly are.
Not buying into hysterical propaganda helps, too.
Johnston would do better working in a soup kitchen, or maybe taking a tour of Bed-Stuy in the summer to see little kids sleeping on fire escapes because their apartments are too hot to sleep in. Or maybe she should hoof it over to the CACC and help some of the thousands of dogs and cats that are euthanized there every year. Lots of real issues out there, Kristen. Our horses don't need you.

The other thing that's cruel is the amount of work required by the retoucher on this layout. I hope he got overtime pay.

Like animal.

Alec Baldwin is a PETA guy...really?

Hey Ohm-
Everyone is entitled to their own opinion - but hell if I'll sit here and let you make up your own facts.
Our horses are permitted by law to work NINE hours, not 12 - and they usually end up working 7 or 8.
Of course horses are intelligent - no one knows that better than the people who work alongside them for hours everyday.
And of course they like to run - which they get an opportunity to do on a regular basis when they are turned out in PA or Upstate NY on vacation.
The *ONLY* major city on North America or Europe that has stopped carriage rides is Toronto. Nearly EVERY other major city has them. Google is your friend.
Grow up, learn something, and stop drinking the Kool Aid.

Kristen Johnston is still alive?

This is what an audit released last year by the New York City controller had to say about the carriage horses:

“Monitoring by the Department of Health and Mental Hygiene and the Department of Consumer Affairs at the Central Park South carriage stands is inadequate, the audit found, and lax veterinary care in the field and infrequent inspections have created health hazards.

In addition, horses are not provided with enough water, risk overheating on hot asphalt and are forced to stand in their own waste because of inadequate drainage, the report said. And though licensing is an important tool for tracking horses, the audit found that the paperwork for 57 carriage horses described different animals from year to year, though the license numbers did not change.”

Many, if not most, of these horses are purchased cheaply at auctions in Pennsylvania after they have been worked hard on Amish farms.

In fact, The Coalition for New York City Animals tells the sad truth that "the average working life of a carriage horse on NYC streets is under four years compared to a police horse whose working life is about 14 years."

Those horses are broken down and miserable. I see them tied to the lampost with no movement permitted. Note that the carriage industry will post here their lies. They are motivated by greed and not love. Those horses live short miserable lives in NYC

Yea, but they make lots of money. Carrots for life. And they can poop anywhere they'd like!

Everything is cruel. Pulling their tails is cruel. Yelling in their ears is cruel...

Horses are animals that are much stronger and much larger than mere humans. So if they wanted to run free and trample everything in their path because they believe themselves to be treated unfairly, they could do so at any time. Nothing is really stopping them. Oh wait, yes it is: The free food, free lodging away from the elements, daily brushings, someone who picks up their poop, and the opportunity to serve mankind in the greatest city in the world.

WTG PETA, using a naked chick to get your message across unsuccessfully because no one f'n cares about horses that aren't in danger or being harmed.

If PETA really cared, they would leave the 20 or so horses in New York City alone.
Give these guys a call; they can tell you to f-off in like 10 languages.

More naked women stories is just what this blog needs. Keep up the good work.

did you see their lodging? Warehouses on 11th avenue. Standing in their own manure and urine. These horses have short life span. Horses doubled park alongside the tour buses. What the he'll

Valeriob,

Huh? Peta isn't anti-horse, or anti-horse riding, it's against keeping large skittish animals in a loud, busy and dangerous metropolitan area like Manhattan.

The links that you sent look awesome. Those organizations seem fantastic. Why would they tell us to fuck off in 10 different languages?

valerie, there are over 200 horses and they are resold or send to slaughter after years of misery. Many horses are replaced. Where do they all go? To Mexico for slaughter

if horse drawn carriages are eliminated from CP, where would the horses go? i know.

would there then be some next generation of happy horses cavorting in a sunny meadow somewhere, because they're not pulling carriages in CP? nope.

Quinn is in the pocket of this industry. She wants to ban pedicabs because the carriage industry doesn't like the competition

Thankfully the media has had their fill of these has been actors, who are illinformed on the causes they support.Ms.Johnson claims horses''live on the 9th floor'',please give a location where that exists,as that was a example of the untrue ridiculous accusations, another purely untrue accusation that the horses can't lie down, when every stable has box stalls.Just wondering what investigating this former actor? or singer?[This is the 1st I heard of her],did on visting the stable owners or talked with any drivers,or asked the governing agencies what the result of their most recent inspections concluded. How can these owners and drivers be slandered by fanatics when their beautiful animals look so healthy and pass every single inspection. The aspca is out on the carriage stands everyday and no animal would be there unless they are in perfect health.

the horses have short life spans. Every year they remove the lame beat down horses and replace them with another horses to abuse. They don't retire them. They resell them for slaughter or put them down

>> So if they wanted to run free and trample everything in their path because they believe themselves to be treated unfairly, they could do so at any time. >>

Or they could start a petition! Write their congressman! They should consider themselves lucky to have jobs in this bad economy that I am sure they are aware of!

But…but…but… *I* work 12 hours days only to return to my little jail cell–sized apartment, and I basically get paid carrots. Save me. …Please!

#37, that's because the ASPCA actually cares about animals, and PETA only cares about publicity!

ASPCA calls for a ban of this industry in NYC because of the cruelty. Check their website

drivers are posting here to misled. ASPCA wants the ban of horse drawn carriages because of the cruelty and abuse. A 8 year old horse Clancy was found dead in Clinton warehouse this year

Its too bad that commenters like #40,have such false accusations,#38 is another illinformed activist brainwashed by the rich organizations that con cash out of them and other unsuspecting animal lovers who believe their lies. When they can prove what they say, then they can talk. So far these fanatics talk and make up stories, lets see where and who purchased any of these horses that went to slaughter. The Carriage companies have farms and can produce every single horse they rotate and retire, you tube is a excellent source of the truth.

The carriage owners are obviously not above offering bribes to inspectors to ignore the substandard conditions of the carriage horses:

From: The New York Sun - Dec. 14, 2007
"The owner of the Central Park Carriage Stables, Cornelius Byrne, 61, allegedly offered the investigator $100 in October 2006 to overlook seven violations, including using the same identification number for two different horses."

Carriage supporter is Abgail aka Peeba from Clinton that harassed people from exposing the truth. Malone stable and shamrock stables does not retire any of the horses.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62aOP5eLigg

Look at this video of horses in traffic near the stables and tell me that this isn't cruel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=62aOP5eLigg

Look at this video of the horses on 11th ave and tell me that this is not cruel

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1H7Fervqwo

Look at this video and tell me that this industry is not hiding anything. They were toss out twice in blinders screeings, they threatened people who try to expose the truth. Look at this person below who was attacked by them
(anti-carriage horse activists attacked on Youtube)

I can't gain access of this video at work, but type the title and you will see

#44 is right: "Youtube is a excellent source of the truth."

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiMC6aOOL38

Shamrock Stables is next door to a school. those kids are next door to horse shit and pigeon dropping and the smell. But this industry has too much political clout. their lobbyist is the brother of council member Michael McMahon and the husband of Bloomberg's deputy Linda Gibbs. Guess out, the Dept of Ed is renting this buildig to Shamrock Stables at below market price. This industry does not retire horses. Look at the docments form dept of health, there are over 1,000 horses gone from the roll. Do you really believe they have 1,000 horses in pasture. NO they put them down or send to slaughter. what is done to theses horses is Cruel and for what? to entertain lazy tourists???

comptroller audit report of NYC carriage industry found no inspe dion of the horses were done

#44, lighten up. It was a joke; a commentary on the living conditions that we regular people have to deal with. You know, regular people who don't have our mothers subsidize our rent and credit cards. I don't like it when horses are captive, either. Actually, I like horses better than *people,* especially humorless people.

What these horse drawn carriages and their drivers have done to Grand Army Plaza on the corner of 5th and Central Park South is a crying shame. The entire place smells terrible and is covered in droppings from the pigeons that sit around eating the horse feed all day. You literally can not touch or lean up against anything.

Why would anyone spend money to sit in a dingy wagon, pulled by a lethargic & foul-smelling sack of bones?

No horses were harmed debating this serious, earth-shattering topic.

#55,has some vivid IMAGINATION.Every horse working in and around nyc is examined by ny state vets before they are licensed to work. The aspca is stationed at Central Park everyday, besides doing stable inspections very regularly,if there is even the slightest imperfection they would be put out of service. As for the '' dingy wagons' she /he thinks they see, most cost are custom made works of art that the owners take a huge pride in.Oh by the way,I heard there is a new 18 story stable in the works, set beside the South Street Seaport, maybe Kristy Johnson wants to havea look!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yiMC6aOOL38&feature=related

I just viewed this clip on youtube and it is so sad how these horses are killed and abused in NYC. There is no excuse for this cruelty

Those horses are being forced, regardless that they're fed. Those men and women driving the carriages are making MONEY off their free labor - THATS what its about. Stop trying to justify yourselves!

They should be sent to a ranch where they can roam free together.

PETA trys to save the animals which is commendable but then they degrade women instead which is completely and totally unacceptable. I've written them letters before and they ignore them. Exploiting women is never a good thing and they should be ashamed of themselves.

Hmmm. We were here before ANY of you. Over 100 yrs in fact. So if you dont like it do what everyone else for over 100 yrs has done...walk away.

We have NEVER been cited for cruelty in over 150 yrs. We have 5 stables, 2 of which are state of the art. All of our horses in nyc have box stalls. (which the mounted police horses dont even have)They get ferrier care, worming, and dental and vet care on a schedualed basis…which is all recorded for the city. We are overseen by 5 agencies (we have more regulations and oversight than at-risk children). We have temp restrictions, and hr work restrctions which are overseen by the aspca. We send our horses to vacations on farms 3-4 months out of each yr. When our horses are retired they are adopted out through one of 3 adoption programs we use. We are licensed 4 times over (carriage, driver, horse, and stable) We are fully insured. Our horses were trained specifically for this job… PETA is really good at lying to people. their intentions are evil. They want to do away with all human to animal relationships. ALL of them including pets. Its disgusting. Whats even more disgusting is that people like Kristen Johnston (who dont know anything about horses in the first place) are halping them!
If you want the TRUTH you can see my videos on youtube of my horses on my farm and in their stable in nyc and at work. This is the TRUTH. I can prove everything I say….they cant! Please take a look before you believe everything they say.

http://www.youtube.com/user/peeba76

they have no adoption program and peeba 76 is Abigail from Clinton Stables that harss and threatens people from exposing the truth. Her video is few of hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of horses that have disappear. Sharmrock Stables and malone stables and Byrne Stables have NO retirement home for them. Their is no regulation at all that requires them to retire them as police horses. And of course these owners care about money and they don't retire them. that is a FACT

No adoption program? You liar felix. I have personally placed over 2 dozen retired carriage horses. And the Humane society of NYC has a program for us too! All you have to do is go to their homepage. The truth smacks you in the face and you STILL are denying it! My videos on youtube SHOW all of my reitered horses which can be traced by hoof number to the dept of health. so, stop your filthy lies and slander, felix.

Abigail from Clinton Stables, Provide the hoofs number here and we match the records because you are a LIAR. The humane society does now have an program but it is based on donations. You drivers don't pay for it. After years of misery and abuse, you don't the horse with no mandatory retirement home. if the animal groups can't find a home for this horse you either put it down or resell for slaughter. That is A FACT. you are only in it for the money, you don't even buy shading for the horse during the hot summer. So stop you lies

::crickets sound:: No response from Peeba76 as to those horses numbers to trace back to the slaughter houses.

nice work, felix.

there's no defense for putting horses through this. anyone who loves animals (not a "friend of animals" like sarah palin, to quote as an example the type of person who would try to defend it) can appreciate the fact that the horses don't belong in the city pulling idiot tourists around. anyone who has seen the horses or interacted with them can sense their obvious disdain and stress about being in the position they're in. there's no excuse for treating animals poorly or putting them through something they really don't want to do.

YOU, felix are the liar. The humane society DOES have an adoption program for our horses and you can see my videos of ALL of my retired horses on my farm. I have placed dozens of horses for others and nothing you say ca change that! You are a slanderer and should not say these untrue and disgusting things. I PROVE the things I say in my videos. My first horse Finbar 1386, Phaelim 2493, Rufus 3182, etc, etc, etc, etc I dont have to prove anything to you Felix, but I feel sorry for the other who you and people like peta and roxanne mislead ans lie to. you should be ashamed of yourself and how many lies you tell!

Peeba76, I never said the humane society does not have a program. Read comment 67. I said you drivers has no mandatory retirement home for these horses and you drivers don't paid for it. if the animals groups can't find a home for these horses, you either put it down or resell it for slaughter. Also you also state you will provide all the information of your horses and where they are but when people take you back on your offer of information then you renege. It is you who should be ashamed of yourself for the cruelty and suffering inflicted on those horses for your greed. And we both know that Shamrock and Malone puts down all their horses. what a way to thank those poor horses after years of misery to make the drivers money and don't even receive rest at the end, only death.

No one "puts down or slaughters" their horses. I would LOVE to see the PROOF of this. We ALL retire our horses to homes all over the country. You will NEVER NEVER have any clue about the industry and the TRUTH if you dont open your eyes. The truth is out there. we know we love our animals and that is all that matters. The shit and lies people like you spew doesnt matter, in the end. Ive never reneged on anything. I am not willing to jeopardize the peace and serenity of the new adoptees so you wont lie anymore. When we make agreements with people they sign papers, as do we. Me giving out personal info to animl rights wackos will only make it HARDER for us to find people willing to adopt our horses. EVERY horse I have ever owned is still on my farm...the PROOF is in their hoof numbers on my videso onyoutube! THE END.
