PETA's Latest Anti-Carriage Horse Campaign

Baby, it's cold outside...but Kristen Johnston would rather go naked than ride in a horse-drawn carriage. PETA has released the above homage to Lady Godiva in order to take a stance against the cruel business of horse carriages. The ads will debut today in Central Park (with Johnston on hand), and will be running on more than 100 taxi tops in the city. Other celebs supporting the cause are Pink, Alec Baldwin, and Chrissie Hynde. Johnston says:

"The horses go from this horrible job where they're pulling people through the streets of Manhattan all day to this tiny jail cell in this building that's like a cramped parking garage. I'd say to tourists considering coming to New York, there's so much amazing stuff to do here. But please do something else. I hope within the next year that there are no more horse-drawn carriages."
Is that a possibility? New York City councilmember Dan Garodnick's is proposing a bill that will phase out horse-drawn carriages, and will replace them with eco-friendly horseless carriages ("replicas of the classic Ford Model T, evoking the romance and glamour of New York's golden years"). Now, when do we see Alec Baldwin's homage to Bianca Jagger riding bareback in Studio 54?

No one "puts down or slaughters" their horses. I would LOVE to see the PROOF of this. We ALL retire our horses to homes all over the country. You will NEVER NEVER have any clue about the industry and the TRUTH if you dont open your eyes. The truth is out there. we know we love our animals and that is all that matters. The shit and lies people like you spew doesnt matter, in the end. Ive never reneged on anything. I am not willing to jeopardize the peace and serenity of the new adoptees so you wont lie anymore. When we make agreements with people they sign papers, as do we. Me giving out personal info to animl rights wackos will only make it HARDER for us to find people willing to adopt our horses. EVERY horse I have ever owned is still on my farm...the PROOF is in their hoof numbers on my videso onyoutube! THE END.

Peeba76, I never said the humane society does not have a program. Read comment 67. I said you drivers has no mandatory retirement home for these horses and you drivers don't paid for it. if the animals groups can't find a home for these horses, you either put it down or resell it for slaughter. Also you also state you will provide all the information of your horses and where they are but when people take you back on your offer of information then you renege. It is you who should be ashamed of yourself for the cruelty and suffering inflicted on those horses for your greed. And we both know that Shamrock and Malone puts down all their horses. what a way to thank those poor horses after years of misery to make the drivers money and don't even receive rest at the end, only death.

YOU, felix are the liar. The humane society DOES have an adoption program for our horses and you can see my videos of ALL of my retired horses on my farm. I have placed dozens of horses for others and nothing you say ca change that! You are a slanderer and should not say these untrue and disgusting things. I PROVE the things I say in my videos. My first horse Finbar 1386, Phaelim 2493, Rufus 3182, etc, etc, etc, etc I dont have to prove anything to you Felix, but I feel sorry for the other who you and people like peta and roxanne mislead ans lie to. you should be ashamed of yourself and how many lies you tell!

    nice work, felix.

there's no defense for putting horses through this. anyone who loves animals (not a "friend of animals" like sarah palin, to quote as an example the type of person who would try to defend it) can appreciate the fact that the horses don't belong in the city pulling idiot tourists around. anyone who has seen the horses or interacted with them can sense their obvious disdain and stress about being in the position they're in. there's no excuse for treating animals poorly or putting them through something they really don't want to do.

::crickets sound:: No response from Peeba76 as to those horses numbers to trace back to the slaughter houses.

  • FelixtheCat & Christine Quinn'

Abigail from Clinton Stables, Provide the hoofs number here and we match the records because you are a LIAR. The humane society does now have an program but it is based on donations. You drivers don't pay for it. After years of misery and abuse, the horse has no mandatory retirement home. if the animal groups can't find a home for this horse you either put it down or resell for slaughter. That is A FACT. you are only in it for the money, you don't even buy shading for the horse during the hot summer. So stop you lies

No adoption program? You liar felix. I have personally placed over 2 dozen retired carriage horses. And the Humane society of NYC has a program for us too! All you have to do is go to their homepage. The truth smacks you in the face and you STILL are denying it! My videos on youtube SHOW all of my reitered horses which can be traced by hoof number to the dept of health. so, stop your filthy lies and slander, felix.

they have no adoption program and peeba 76 is Abigail from Clinton Stables that harss and threatens people from exposing the truth. Her video is few of hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of horses that have disappear. Sharmrock Stables and malone stables and Byrne Stables have NO retirement home for them. Their is no regulation at all that requires them to retire them as police horses. And of course these owners care about money and they don't retire them. that is a FACT

We have NEVER been cited for cruelty in over 150 yrs. We have 5 stables, 2 of which are state of the art. All of our horses in nyc have box stalls. (which the mounted police horses dont even have)They get ferrier care, worming, and dental and vet care on a schedualed basis…which is all recorded for the city. We are overseen by 5 agencies (we have more regulations and oversight than at-risk children). We have temp restrictions, and hr work restrctions which are overseen by the aspca. We send our horses to vacations on farms 3-4 months out of each yr. When our horses are retired they are adopted out through one of 3 adoption programs we use. We are licensed 4 times over (carriage, driver, horse, and stable) We are fully insured. Our horses were trained specifically for this job… PETA is really good at lying to people. their intentions are evil. They want to do away with all human to animal relationships. ALL of them including pets. Its disgusting. Whats even more disgusting is that people like Kristen Johnston (who dont know anything about horses in the first place) are halping them!

If you want the TRUTH you can see my videos on youtube of my horses on my farm and in their stable in nyc and at work. This is the TRUTH. I can prove everything I say….they cant! Please take a look before you believe everything they say.

"What these horse drawn carriages and their drivers have done to Grand Army Plaza on the corner of 5th and Central Park South is a crying shame. The entire place smells terrible and is covered in droppings from the pigeons that sit around eating the horse feed all day. You literally can not touch or lean up against anything."

Hmmm. We were here before ANY of you. Over 100 yrs in fact. So if you dont like it do what everyone else for over 100 yrs has done...walk away.

PETA trys to save the animals which is commendable but then they degrade women instead which is completely and totally unacceptable. I've written them letters before and they ignore them. Exploiting women is never a good thing and they should be ashamed of themselves.

  • StinaLES

Those horses are being forced, regardless that they're fed. Those men and women driving the carriages are making MONEY off their free labor - THATS what its about. Stop trying to justify yourselves!

They should be sent to a ranch where they can roam free together.

I just viewed this clip on youtube and it is so sad how these horses are killed and abused in NYC. There is no excuse for this cruelty

#55,has some vivid IMAGINATION.Every horse working in and around nyc is examined by ny state vets before they are licensed to work. The aspca is stationed at Central Park everyday, besides doing stable inspections very regularly,if there is even the slightest imperfection they would be put out of service. As for the '' dingy wagons' she /he thinks they see, most cost are custom made works of art that the owners take a huge pride in.Oh by the way,I heard there is a new 18 story stable in the works, set beside the South Street Seaport, maybe Kristy Johnson wants to havea look!

  • NannyState

No horses were harmed debating this serious, earth-shattering topic.

  • nik13

Why would anyone spend money to sit in a dingy wagon, pulled by a lethargic & foul-smelling sack of bones?

  • AlpineIllusion

  • REALITY CHECK

#44, lighten up. It was a joke; a commentary on the living conditions that we regular people have to deal with. You know, regular people who don't have our mothers subsidize our rent and credit cards. I don't like it when horses are captive, either. Actually, I like horses better than *people,* especially humorless people.
