Gus Van Sant’s new film Milk tells the story of Harvey Milk, who in 1977 became the first openly gay man to be elected to a major public office in the United States, only to be assassinated within his first year of serving on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. At turns tragic and exhilarating, the film chronicles the last eight years of Milk’s life (played by Sean Penn), when he worked on campaigns for public office and the protection of gay employees.
Besides Penn, the stellar cast also includes Josh Brolin, James Franco, Alison Pill, and Emile Hirsch. That group joined Gus Van Sant at a press conference yesterday, during which Franco revealed that he wanted to be a part of the film so badly that he would have “played the pool boy” just to be in it. But, thankfully, he plays Milk’s lover, giving the world a steamy Sean Penn and James Franco make out scene! $11 well spent!
Another tidbit: Van Sant (pictured) said they looked at hours of archival footage for developing the characters and maintaining historical accuracy. (In the film, you'll see snippets of "home movies" from The Hormel Gay and Lesbian Center's archive in San Francisco.) Van Sant also takes pride in using the same Director of Photography (Harris Savides) that Madonna refuses to do any work without: "I thought you know, she must be pretty discerning. I had the Madonna effect. I get to use Madonna’s DP." (And her ex-husband, too.)
Of course, it's impossible to overlook the fact that Milk, which opens Wednesday, is being released on the heels of the Prop 8 passage in California, the same state where Milk helped mobilize the gay community to demand their civil rights. Speaking about Prop 8, Penn said, "It's only an issue because of ignorance in the first place. We don't have any excuse for being ignorant of the law...or ignorant of human history... In fact any support of Prop 8 would be minimally manslaughter. Because human history tells us that teenage boys are going to hang themselves out of a reach for an identity that they can't get.... And if this movie is a part of an engine to help reveal that, that's going to make us all happy and proud."

Why is Gus Van Sant using Madonna's name to hype Harris Savides? It's not like this is their first (or second, or third) time working together, and dude shot Elephant and Gerry! Those are way more impressive than any Madonna video.

Marriage is for churches, civic unions are for the state. Hetero state marriage if defined by an interpretation of a religious document like the Bible is unconstitutional. It's not the business of the state to interpret the friggin' Bible, or any religious document.
I'm for equal civic unions for all. You wanna be married, go to a church. But it shouldn't be legal unless you have a civic union first. My mother is not married in the eyes of her church because she only had a state marriage, and not a religious marriage in her church. That says it all for me. Poor woman, living in sin for the last 47 years. Not the state's fault, though.

Saw "Milk" last night - really an amazing film. It's a bit of a tear-jerker.
I've been reading Gothamist for many years. I had no idea there was such a collection of raging homophobes who also read this blog. I'm not really comfortable with knowing that there is such hate behind the words written in many of the comments above.
Perhaps it is time to move on. Thanks Gothamist for years of interesting NYC articles. I'm sorry that your readership is filled with people who stir up negative emotions in others. It's really quite a shame. It may not be fair to judge a publication on its readership but the comments above are not being moderated and at times it feels like this is a soapbox for hatred.

I'm a strong opponent of Proposition 8, and I look forward to seeing the courts overturn it. That being said, I think Penn's hyperbole is a bit over the top.
It's sad to me that this movie has become about Prop 8 only, instead of human rights, generally. I realize the importance of the gay marriage issue and don't want that trivialized, but what about all the other Harvey Milks: Matthew Shepards, Duanna Simpsons, Teish Taylors... etc. Is not fighting for the right to not be killed kinda important too?
I realize the political environment of today has resulted in this sort of focus on one goal... but sheesh...

The real hero in the gay activist movement and group is Harry Hay. Why not tell his story? He was homosized as a boy, then went on to start the national gay liberation movement under the premise that man/boy relationships need to be expanded and promoted. He became a principal member and founder of NAMBLA. Until his death he and other members were principal and keynote speakers for the LGBT. He spoke openly about promoting pedophilia and supported marriage between same-sex and men and boys. Prop 8 received millions of dollars in donations from his likes. However, the leaders of the No on 8 anti-family movement want to redefine family to include a mom and her same-sex friend, a man and his boy lover, and a man and his multiple wives. Which is why No on 8 received millions of dollar also from members of polygamist sects and groups in Utah.
It is ashame that these people and activist have so much hate for straights, gays, and themselves that in 1973 homosexual practicing psychiatrist, without factual basis lobbied to remove the DSM 111 code from homosexual activity depriving millions of gays of treatment and forcing them to self medicate with drugs and alcohol.

Harry Hay is the founder of the modern gay rights movement, a pedipohile, and supporter of NAMBLA.
