Dozens of Pets Killed in Bronx Fire

2008_11_catf.jpgYesterday's three-alarm fire at a Bronx strip mall destroyed a number of businesses, including a pet store. According to the Daily News, over "100 frantic birds, reptiles and small animals died trapped in their cages" at Stephanie and Amanda's Pet Center. Joel Rivera, the store's manager, said of his cousin, who owns the store, "He just couldn't stay and watch what was happening." Rivera added that firefighters helped save "parrots, parakeets, rabbits, guinea pigs, lizards and other reptiles, at least two cats and a pair of guard dogs." A neighbor told NY1, "I feel sorry for all the animals because that is the first thing that God made. And you got to have mercy for them." The other ravaged businesses include a barber shop, grocery store, and a dry cleaners, where the fire began. Three firefighters suffered minor injuries.

man, the image of this in my head totally ruined my morning. This is gonna weigh on me all day, probably, so sad....

Though, I can STILL manage to eek out this joke: Where's Pee-Wee Herman when you need him?

Fuck man... That is not what I wanted to read this morning.

rubyredhead is a PETAphile.

This is a tragedy. Pet stores should be required to have safety features, such as sprinklers, to ensure that trapped, caged animals don't perish this way.

#3: Now I don't feel so bad for having that be the first thing to pop into my head when I heard this.

But no firefighters died? I only ask because that's way more important.

no firefighters died because they decided to fight the fire from the outside.

Right, rubyred, pet store owners are the reason there is so much wrong in today's society. If we could just shut them down then the world would be one big utopia...

Also Christine Quinn is the one that stop the bill to require fire sprinklers in pet shops, she want these pets to burn alive. I hate this bitch

CAll Dilan to find out why this bill has not been hear for over 2 years when it has over 25 sponsors. Quinn is stopping this bill to be hear.

Dear ignorant humans that commented on this subject: you do not own the Earth and you are not superior. I'm SO sick of hearing people saying how humans are so much more important and the rights of animals don't matter. Apparently there are a lot of non-pet owners on here, because these comments are f*ing a joke and waste of time, rednecks.

Educate yourself.

Educate yourself, OHM! Humans are superior. If you don't want to believe yourself superior to a dog that eats its own poop (and then minutes later licks your face) or that chases its own tail or that relies on a lowly human (your opinion) for its food, shelter, and warmth, then you go right ahead. When a cat is able to get up every morning to shave and shower and make themselves look presentable enough to go to work and use a computer in such a way as to communicate their thoughts and feelings to the general public, then I may give them some credit. Until then, shush and go eat a steak!

#16 all your points are valid and still don't justify cruelty and abuse. The fact that humans are "superior" in not means and end on itself. You can be compassionate and respectful towards other creatures without diminishing you "superiority". IN FACT when being able to comprehend that by expanding o your understanding of compassionate life you can actually be a happier human... some even call those "saints". Don't use your human condition to be the worse that you can think of...It is for some a struggle in the opposite direction. The weak point of your assumed superiority: cynicism is barbaric.

#16 Wow,you think you are remarkable because you groom yourself and can use a computer? ignorant to the core.

Just ban the sale of live animals in retail stores and be done with it. Several cities and states are proposing just that. Pet stores do great business without the damn critters in there anyway.

I am the girl who rescued that kitten. That is me in the photo top right. He was handed to me. He was wet I guess from the fire hoses he might have came out of one of the other burning buildings but was told he came out of the pet shop. He had blood and puss coming from his bottom. He seems to have some visual problems, underweight and earmites and didnt open his eyes for 4 hours. This is what made me question if he was from the pet store and not one of the other conjoining buildings. How could he be in such poor condition besides the obvious injuries form the fire. You will see on the video on fox that the kitten is moving his head around but couldn't open his eyes. I guess from the smoke. After I brought him I made dozens of phone calls and posts looking for help. A.S.P.C.A. was closed and referred me to an animal hospital on 62nd street that is available 24 hours a day for emergencies but only if you have 110 dollars UPFRONT....UNBELIEVEABLE. Where is the compassion. Need less to say I didnt have 110 dollars on me upfront. Noody seems to take kittens for emergencies unless it is animal control. Animal control is doomsday for most animals. Well kitty fell asleep so he was resting and not in pain and slept in my bed cuddled with me warm and dry. At home I did visual tests in the morning once they opened to see if he could see. I think he has visual problems but not totally blind as 2 times out of about 10 he would respond. I wiped him down with a wet cloth and a little shampoo to get the smoke smell off of him. It didnt all come off but it lightened up a bit. The vet said it was good that I just wiped him down and not bathed him as he was very traumatized and shaking so hard when he reached my house. The owner was long gone once I had him and I stood around with kitty watching them put out the blaze for around 2 hours hoping the owner or a spca truck would arrive. Animal control came after 5 hours from when the fire started when the blaze was OUT. I refused to give him to them. If he didnt get adopted they would put him to sleep. He deserved better one on one care and a chance than that. I finally brought him home to rest. I brought him to a very good vet in Manhattan in Murry Hill first thing in the morning and just want to thank the dozens upon dozens of outpourings of people who want to help kitty and whom are paying for her medical expenses. She will be placed into a good home. My condolences go out to the pet shop owner and all the other business owners on that block who always had a friendly smile. We named the little 4 month kitten (who is siamese) Ziggy. I will post an update later today when I go back and check on him in the hospital.

p.s. Ziggy loves to kiss and I am so attached to him. I cried having to leave him in the hospital but he seemed to no longer be in pain and purring and kissing uncontrollably as he loves to be snuggled and held. He is so underweight and fragile and I can't wait to see him live a happy and healthy kitty life....

My gripe is why is it that animal control didnt arrive to a pet shop fire when the fire first started. I t started around 4 pm. I got to the fire around 5:30 or 6. The kitten was handed to me a few minutes after that and we stood out there for around an hour in a half to 2 hours and then animal control arrived....

p.p.s. if you would like to adopt the kitten animal control kept he is there so I would just call and ask them about the kitten who was in the bronx fire. When I was refusing to give Ziggy to them, the other kitten was in their truck crying in pain uncontrollably. Please rescue him and call there to adopt him and save his life. Ziggy is in good hands and will not be put to sleep but I am worried about the other one at animal control....

#17, I love animals. I really do. I just can't stand listening to some bleeding-heart cry and whine because they would rather save a cat from a burning building than a human.

Also, cynicism is not barbaric. Cynicism advances the human race by shining a light on the things that are holding us back. Without cynicism, we'd all believe everything every government official promises us and would never question them when they do not deliver. Calling cynicism barbaric is like calling someone who throws water ballons at others a terrorist.

Felix, if you really want to talk about ignorance, let's talk about yours. Do you seriously believe yourself to live a life completely devoid of animal cruelty? If so, you are sorely mistaken. Unless you live in an extremely rural area, are a vegan, have no electricity, have access to clean water, live off of a garden you reap and sow yourself, and are able to void your excretory system in a way that you can guarantee it doesn't harm animals, there is no way that everything you use or do in your daily life is cruelty-free. I admire your passion, but the fact that you would put animals before humans is, in a word, inhumane.

And to answer you, yes! I do indeed find it remarkable that humans were able to evolve to a point where we invented and then use computers on a daily basis. If you don't see that as a hell of an accomplishment, then you really need to bone up on your history (and science).
