Knitting Factory Fires Nearly All Employees

As previously mentioned, the Knitting Factory will soon be moving from its current Leonard Street location to the old Luna Lounge in Williamsburg. The change will take place early next year, and the venue will have its last Manhattan night on New Year’s Eve. The NY Press is now reporting that "the whole staff—65 people in all—is losing their jobs." Well, not all of them; "two of the 65 staff members—both managers—are being kept on. According to the bartender, the staff was told in April that they were being laid off en masse when Jared Hoffman, who took over in 2002, was still looking at a space" and "wanted to start fresh." Allegedly there were letters stapled to the employee's checks that broke the news. One old booker at the venue said that it's Hoffman who “fucked it all up." Well, Hoffman was just axed as well, so maybe the Brooklyn space really will revive the KF name?

Who knew that the Kinitting Factory employed so many people?

It's true that it was never the same after leaving Houston Street. I remember when bands like The Lounge Lizards used to play for a whole week, and wandering over from my apartment on 4th bet A & B and seeing shows on 3 different nights. The new location was very blah, too slick and too lifeless.

    Haters gotta hate!

At least the Knitting Factory has found a way to avoid going the way of the rest of citys small clubs. No secret that the Knit was DOA in 2000/2001. The owners brought in J and he brought us back to life for a few more years - built a future the Knit with a better located, smaller club in W'burg that will let the Knit do what it used to do best.

Sad to see KF move once more... Everywhere I look, people keep finding new ways to be out of a job :(.

We all knew that the building had been sold and that the Knit's lease was ending. The letter did not fire us - to the contrary it said that we were all in together until the end.... and that the club would remain fully staffed up to the day we closed. I think that is pretty cool actually - if they were bastards they would have been cutting right and left.

What can you do - we all knew the end was coming - just wish there were more jobs at the new spot.

Similar story for Tonic. Somebody fucked it all up. Used developers as a cover up.

The KF was never the same after they left the E. Houston spot. The new venue never had the same feel.
