The second day of hunting season claimed one more life than anyone would have hoped for when a toddler was accidentally shot and killed inside her grandmother's trailer in Swan Lake. Edward Taibi of Howard Beach was arrested on charges of second-degree manslaughter after a stray bullet from his .300 Magnum rifle went through the trailer and struck sixteen-month-old Charly Skala in the chest.
Taibi was hunting on a friend's property in Swan Lake, just south of the Catskills, when he climbed down from his tree stand in order to take a follow-up shot at a deer that he had already wounded. He was immediately devastated upon learning of the accident, made even worse by the fact that he had lost a daughter of his own in recent years. His girlfriend Evelyn Lopez told WCBS, "He lost a 12-year-old daughter to cancer two years ago and kids are his life."
Police say Taibi was breaking the law by hunting too close to the trailer where Skala's family was watching football when the bullet came through its wall. It is illegal to discharge a firearm or bow within 500 feet of an occupied residence or business unless the hunter owns or leases the property, or has the owner’s consent. "You have to know what's on the other side of your target and in this case, this gentleman didn't take that safety precaution," said Lt. Pierce Gallagher of the New York State Police.
Charly Skala's grandmother told the Post, "The bottom line is, a hunter shot through my house."

sounds like a horrific accident and not deliberate.
Guns are only good for killing worthless poachers & redneck NRA Members
"The second day of hunting season claimed one more life than anyone would have hoped for..."
Not sure about the wording of this sentence.
ban gay hunting
Yikes. How sad.
Ted Nugent says "eat what you kill."
Happy Hunting season!
what sort of sport is it to kill a defenseless animal? stupid people with their guns. hunting is not a sport. Too bad he didn't shoot himself instead of the baby
So he lost his child to cancer and he still enjoys hunting defenseless animals????
This shit's pretty common. People from the city/Jersey go to upstate NY or PA to go hunting. Usually, though, they just kill each other (which most of the locals are okay with) or have heart attacks.
what sort of sport is it to kill a defenseless animal?
Would you prefer they starve to death? How humane.
This is a terrible tragedy. This was surely an accident, but that doesn't minimize the mistake this fellow made. You have to know what's around you before you make the decision to pull the trigger. This could and SHOULD have been avoided. My thoughts are with Charly's family.
The Orange Mafia strikes again.
They don't take kindly up there to guidos from Queens who cause fatal hunting accidents that kill a local.
it gets sort of crazy up there during hunting season. it's best to stay away for a week.
some rural parts of update don't take kind to anyone. but if you're a good neighbor, you'll be treated well in fresh venison meat. it just takes time for the locals to warm up to you and remember posted property means posted property.
"Accident" is a word that too often absolves blame.
This guy was hunting illegally close to a home -- that's reckless. Not intentional, sure, but reckless.
it's stretching the term accident when you act this recklessly, close to houses AND hunting with a rifle out of a tree stand!
#2, don't forget that they're good for killing knee-jerk liberals too...
[10] And pray tell, how can you be sure it would have starved to death? Do you have some kind of precognition. Animals have been dying of starvation for hundreds of millions of years. Man has been killing for sport for hundreds. Even if the deer population is way too high, there are ways of reducing it other than flying lead, ways that would not endanger humans at all. But I guess it just wouldn't be as much "fun" or as "manly" for some people.
FROM MY COLD DEAD HANDS!
Don't tempt me.
[17]Its not like the animal is killed, and then wasted, in rural areas venison is a big huge supply for a lot of people.

Everyone should own a rifle and know how to hunt.
I lived near there as a kid. "Backwoods" does not begin to describe it. He's hunting for food less than 5 miles from a big grocery store.
I really don't get it. How can any decent person derive pleasure out of harming a defenseless animal?
There has to be something seriously wrong with someone who hunts animals soley for the "sport" of seeing them die by your gun.
Hugo Mego, You really are an ass and a coward. No joke. You are probably a troll
Let's disable the comments for articles like this next time. #5 and #11 are the only ones with any heart around here. Everyone else wants to get up on their stupid soapbox.
@HowBoutDemCowboys
Youre right- now go commit suicide you worthless Texan
For the record, Texas is the most worthless state in the history of America- It was the main supplier of weapons to Confederate secessionists, it made us dependant on foreign oil from Terrorist states, and it killed JFK while creating George W. Bush. I'd say Texas should be Nuked- but whats the point of nuking a place thats already such a shithole?
I'm not from Texas and I've never been to Texas. I like a football team from there, and that's it. You can cry and whine all day and wish there was no such thing as guns or weapons or whatever, but in the end all that accomplishes is making everyone understand just how useless you are. Come up with workable solutions before you resort to name calling and then, maybe, someone will actually listen to you instead of dismissing you as a stain in the underwear of humanity.
...and this is why we shouldn't own firearms.
