Well, it only took two weeks for Alaska's election officials to figure out that Anchorage mayor Mark Begich (D) managed beat the incumbent, convicted Sen. Ted Stevens (R), who has been serving since 1968. Begich said, “I can’t wait to get to work fighting for Alaskan families," and his win also means an end to guessing whether Governor Sarah Palin might appoint herself to Stevens' seat. There is some talk of a recount (Begich's margin is 3,724 with just 2,500 votes left to recount), but the Anchorage Daily News reports with machine counting "recent Alaska recounts have resulted in little change in the final tally." As for other undecided Senate races: In Minnesota, Sen. Norm Coleman (R) leads Al Franken (D) by 215 votes, but a recount will start tomorrow, while the Dec. 2 runoff between Sen. Saxby Chambliss (R) and Jim Martin (D) in Georgia is drawing big names.

Another corrupt repugnican bites the dust. Good riddance. Maybe they will send him for some jail time if they just dig a little deeper too.
Would he really have the balls to ask for a recount?
Really?!?...
Stevens can take it to hell.
I thought the deal was Alaska could be part of the USA as long as it stayed out of the way and kept its yap shut.
Good riddance. Don't let the door hit you out Stevens!
What is with these politicians about not retiring!? 85 years old and still on the job!? Wonder why this country is in a disaster.
I read this first on Anchorigist.com
Oh, no, wait, I did not. I just made that up.
But if you google Alaska blog (without quotation marks), you won't find this story in the top 10.
Only when I googled "alaska blog" with the quotation marks, did I find mention of this story.

But I am still goin' to keep on readin' gothamist, you betcha.
Am I the only one who thinks it's weird that half the population of Alaska voted for a man who was convicted of corruption? WTF?!?
There have been posts on the Gothamist that are quite obviously out of scope, but this post absolutely takes the cake (and don't try to use Palin or Franken as a link to the NY relation angle either). I REALLY hope you're not trying to be CNN since I am sure most readers don't come here expecting to read about Ted Stevens, a Senator that no one outside of Alaska know until this election.
I am sure there are still plenty of NY related news to post here in place of this.
@Dude69--I thought this was interesting because there was talk of whether Sarah Palin would appoint herself to his seat, if Stevens were re-elected. And also the idea that the election vote-counting was taking so long.
And people outside of Alaska have been aware of Stevens since at least 2006, when he made his statement about the INternet being made up of pipes and tubes.

Nomeist?

It's not that weird if you don't like his opponent and you assume that in all likelihood Stevens would have to resign anyway. The governor is a Republican so you would essentially be voting to keep the seat in Republican hands, not necessarily voting for a felon.
Good point, EastRiver.
I look forward to the slight possibility that the next committee chair in charge of regulating the Internet has more than half a clue about what it is and isn't.
@MT

It's the same logic that gets Sheldon Silver reelected by insular, siege-mentality, coots and biddys in his district:
"Shyelly Seelvah's a kyed frum da neighbahood! Oy! Such a good boy!"
And frankly the same logic that forgives Bill Clinton for being an adulterer. (It drove me up the wall to see all that awesome political capital frittered away.)
@EastRiver
Touché :)
40 years in office.
Anyone else wanna join us in supporting Term Limits?
Rob: Stevens isn't the chair of anything, as the GOP isn't in power in the Senate. And he's not even Ranking Member of the Commerce Committee, though he is still the RM of the Full Committee Subcommittee of the Commerce Committee (that's for real.. no wonder the guy gets confused talking about the internet).
Another Republicunt bites the dust & no pithy comment from HUGO MEGO or Ides of March?
#17: Thanks for the clarification, and my new headache. :-)
@Jen - You shouldn't have to defend your editorial decisions to the handle "Dude69." It's pretty clear this affects us all.
Now Sarah Palin has to earn it. Goodbye, sweetie.
