Archdiocese Facing New Crisis as Catholic Schools Struggle

2008_11_Jesus.jpgNew York City Catholic schools are seeing their enrollment numbers dropping dramatically, leading to fears that more schools will have to consolidate or join the 1,300 that have closed nationwide since 1990. Enrollment within the Archdiocese of New York has dropped almost 7% in the last year alone. Catholic schools have long been considered a vital cornerstone in educating New York's kids, especially in lower-income areas of the city. But with more charter schools opening and the average Catholic high school tuition at $5,500, one former charter school principal told the Post, "If you're a middle-income family, you can pony up five grand a year for your kids to go to a Catholic school that's decent. Or, if you can find a charter school that's actually pretty good, then why not take a freebie?"

How much does it cost for the city to send a child to school for a whole year? I'm guessing it costs more than $5,000. Isn't there some way for the city to make catholic schools an option? Maybe for students who aren't hard-core thugs and actually want to work?

When my parents took me out of the public school system and put me in catholic school it was the best thing they could have ever done for me. I actually got a chance to learn without the pressure of worrying about some a-hole in my class with a knife.

this whole battle was fought out with vouchers and the chruch lost and unfortunately its only a matter of time before these schools close. From a finacial standpoint it makes sense that the city use these existing schools to meet the needs it obviously has - either with vouchers or simply take them over and make them public schools...whats happening instead is the buildings get sold for luxary condos...rip st.johns

Maybe they could throw in free handjobs from the priests.

looks like the churches need a bailout also...

WWJHF?

Who Would Jesus Have Fondled?

Good riddance. Mind fucking and guilt be damned!

That's really too bad. I attended a Catholic School from Kindergarten until High school and that education has truly served me well.

The nuns lived to teach and really cared about the emotional and academic growth of their students. They lived at the school and for the school and they were never compensated for their work - they taught because they loved to teach.

I was raised Episcopalian and never had much of a religous life, but I will always be grateful to the Catholic nuns that taught me everything from how to diagram a sentence to how to be a compassionate human being.

The nuns who taught me and my brother were complete bitches. They teased students, they beat students and struck fear into everyone's hearts. I retract my earlier comment. Come to think of it, their brutality kept me out of trouble. If they didn't beat me my mother sure as hell would have.

Even though I am not Catholic, I went to a Catholic school growing up in the middle America because it was much better than the local public high school. Or, it was college-focused rather than Army / trade school focused. They offered scholarships / work programs so pretty much anyone who wanted to go could find a way.

Clearly the church has a long way to go in correcting their problems with child abuse and their overall hypocrisy, but I'm sad to hear about this. The Catholic church holds an important place in society and they did a pretty damn good job as far as I'm concerned with my education. The vast majority of priests / nuns are caring, selfless people and the organization deserves a chance to improve itself.

I see all the knee-jerk bigots are out again.

What's to gripe with a 98% graduation rate with about 80% going to college? At no cost to the taxpayer?

And this is in the minority neighborhoods. In public schools they wind up going to Spoffard or Rikers.

free blowjob with every new student.
with two students, get one weekend sleepover with priest of your choice.

Statistically speaking, biological fathers have a much higher child abuse rate than Catholic priests, and priests have a lower abuse rate than almost any other profession. That doesn't matter apparently, in our culture, which wants to demonize the Catholic Church and rarely bothers with facts or logic in doing so. In no way do I mean to excuse those priests who were guilty of sexual abuse, or the bishops who failed to protect the children under their care; the Church should take responsibility in these areas, but the knee jerk assumption that all priests are child molesters is tiresome. Re: #9, the Catholic Church in this country now has one of the most stringent child protection policies of any other agency in the country that deals with children...much more so than the Department of Education in NYC, for example.

Here is a video of gay activists attacking a little old lady and her cross.

Catholic schools are the best. charter school are more expense which taxpayers bear and what is different is that they wear uniforms and healthier meals but test results are still poor.

@9 nuns are the best, they devote their whole lives to teaching kids, they are not married and they are spiritual and your kids are their kids. it is sad about the priest, i wonder if the gay agenda was behind all these large number of gay priests that damaged the church reputation. I am not defending the church, the church should never permit them in the priesthood and never should have cover the abuse. They should have turn over those gays and have them jail rape. it is sad that people don't realize how important the church teaching is. it makes you a stronger and moral person. Switzerland has the highest suicide rate and i know it related to their lack of spirituality .

I also went to Catholic school up through high school. High school was great, but I think the Jesuits have a particularly good style.

The nuns in grammar school however, were tough and smacked kids around. I remember this one kid who was clearly dyslexic before it was diagnosed got his face slapped for not reading quickly enough.

Sr. Margaret also told us that when we misbehave that we're "driving the thorns deeper into Christ's head." I woulda thought he tossed that crown of thorns by now.

People should not have to turn to a religious school where they might not agree with the beliefs to ensure that their kids receive a quality education.

As the article says, it used to be that Catholic schools were the only alternative to extremely bad public schools for many kids. If some public and charter schools have improved to the point where they are a viable option, I think it is a positive change.

Decades of defending and supporting illegal immigration from predominately Catholic countries and they STILL can't keep the classrooms filled?

#11 = one of those kneejerk bigots.

Juvenile and coarse, as well. Must have gone to public school.

why yes I did, how did you know?
you're chinese, aren't you? and, I'm the bigot?
