When someone has a secret meeting with the President-elect, naturally there will be speculation about what might have been discussed. And when that person is Hillary Clinton, it adds to up Secretary of State talk.
Of course it helps when President-elect Barack Obama's advisers are doing the gossiping: Per the Daily News, they "told NBC, ABC and CNN last night their boss is considering putting Hillary Clinton in charge of the nation's foreign policy as secretary of state." However, a Clinton adviser claimed it was for "personal business"--like how a career change can be personal business?
While names like John Kerry and Chuck Hagel are also being mentioned for the job, political strategist Michael McKenna told the Post that Clinton has "a better than average Rolodex" and "the ability to leverage Bill and the residual good will toward him." Politico notes that this could give Obama a "Team of Rivals," the way Abraham Lincoln had dissenting voices and opponents in his cabinet.
Today, Clinton was speaking at a public transit conference in Albany, where she said, "I’m not going to speak or address anything about the president-elect and his administration." But let's rewind to Monday night, when at the Glamour Women of the Year Awards, she referred to fellow honoree and current Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice during her remarks, "Whether it's standing up for women who have been denied their rights or being the secretary of state and carrying the burden of that office, there are so many ways each of us can make a difference."

Hillary Clinton is the most unqualified person in the USA to be secretary of state. Why must cult leader Obama continue to pander to everyone? Hillary Clinton does not have the temperament to be secretary of state and her ghastly appearance will only work against her and the USA.
WOW, WTF is she thinking, we all know she can get nothing done where she is currently employed. And just think of those millions of voters Hilly who need you to fight injustice and file papers in the senate and not just prance around in your pants suit all over the world...think of the voters hilly.
It's the quickest way to send Hillary to Darfur without having to keep Bush's CIA Director.
Awesome.
Get her the fuck out of NY.
As Secretary of State, her job will be to find as many new wars as possible. Given her fondness for war and empire, she might be good at it, whereas she's fairly ineffective in the Senate. So it might be best keeping her there.
Yes, Jen, it adds to up. Indeed.
...the most unqualified person...cult leader Obama...her ghastly appearance...
There are a zillion bad things you can say about Clinton going to State but her qualifications and her appearance aren't among the top 50. Republican funder Moon is a cult leader; Obama has a cult _following_ like, oh, Springstein.
One good thing about Clinton landing at State is that it will get her out of the Senate and David Patterson will get to pick our new Jr. Senator. I can think of a dozen better candidates for State but I do think Hilary might be good for staff morale. There have been serious problems attracting and keeping good jr. staffers at State over the last 7 years. The brain drain at the career level is pretty bad. (There's no brian to drain at the political level.) Clinton, by all accounts, is a surprisingly good manager and it seems likely that she'll attract and keep some bright young diplomats. She's quite popular overseas and she has a political heft that Rice never had--both of those features will go a long way for the first year or two.
The downside of her at State is, yeah, she's too hawkish and straight up Foreign Affairs for my tastes. We could use a little creativity at State; it's going to be a tricky position.
Sorry, thats a picture of Madeline Albright, not Hillary.
I'm no great Hillary fan, but she would make a good Secretary of State. I also think she'll be Obama's choice for the Supreme Court when the first vacancy occurs.
Joe Liberman intact and now this? What sort of change is this. it is the same controlled zionist.
If true, perhaps this will give some New Yorker a chance to run for Senate. Now the next question is: Will she have a bridge needlessly renamed after her?
Not the "change" choice if you ask me. I hope its Richardson.

Hillary would be a fantastic asset to the new administration as Secretary of State. But this is all speculation, since no one actually knows what was discussed at the meeting.
Hillary would also have made a fantastic President. Hopefully in 2012.
7 has got a point.
She's too hawkish to be Sec. State unless BO can muzzle her properly, which would be difficult.
Where can we put her where she will do the least damage?
I'm all for Hillary as Secy of State but I don't know if she'll take it. I think she might want to talk to Teddy Kennedy about how much can be accomplished in the Senate once you accept you won't be president before she takes it, though.
She'll do well, of course, and she'll be well received around the world because she's not a neocon warmonger like the current crew. She may be a "hawk". I'm fine with that as long as - here's the key - she's hawkish against actual enemies.
I think being on the Supreme Court is an interesting idea for her because Bill never did that.
I suggested this to a friend soon after the election. Damn you, NSA, stop tapping my phone! She'd be a darn sight better than that sycophant who has the position now.
I don't think Hillary would be nominated for the Supreme Court because she's never been on any bench. She was a lawyer yes, but never a judge.
[7] Don't take HUGO_MEGO seriously. His posting history over the last few months shows him to be either a bad troll or even further right than Rush Limbaugh. Maybe both.
What's with the picture. That isn't hillary.
Hillary might be good for staff morale.
I believe this is her greatest strength.
Oh this is going to be great, what better way then to bomb Syria and Pakistan (and soon SUDAN and Eastern Europe/Russian border) then with this sell-out?
Hillary would also have made a fantastic President. Hopefully in 2012.
dd7, do you know anything about politics? Do you think Hillary in her right mind would challenge an incumbent democrat a la Kennedy in 1980?
Then again, I wouldn't put anything past her.
