Google Maps Wraps Subway

Last month the History Channel series "Cities of the Underworld" was the first subway wrap ad to be unveiled on the Times Square Shuttle. Now Google Maps has stepped up to the plate, helping the MTA with their huge budget crisis by paying for a colorful ad campaign on the S. NYC the Blog notes that "Google has only wrapped the exterior of the train, leaving the interior with the more traditional ads we are used to seeing."

The MTA notes that they'll "realize over $125 million in 2008 in advertising revenues. If these new initiatives are implemented on a permanent base, the MTA expects these revenues to grow substantially." But can it fend off the $3 fare hike?

Answer is yes to no fare hike. :-)

As soon as Barak Obama becomes President, the federal government will make a true committment to mass transit, not to mention the MTA is getting funding for the advertising revenue by significant players.

If the MTA was in dire straights, they would not have extended an option order for brand new subway cars.

One of the ads in the car is wrong - it mislabels Times Square as Grand Central Station. Silly, especially for a train that only makes those two stops.

Of course, the target advertising audience for a street-mapping site is a bunch of subway commuters who either know their map by heart or use the ones right there on the wall.
