Looks like the little park that could...couldn't. The Williamsburg waterfront park, dubbed East River Park, opened just last year, but now the NY Post is saying it "will be shut for the winter as part of Gov. Paterson's sweeping budget cuts." While the closure will only be from January to March (clearly not the time to be sitting on the waterfront anyway), the NYC Park Advocates group noted, "Closing a park is unheard of in modern times." Perhaps when it makes its triumphant comeback it will have better landscaping, allow pets and extend hours (currently it's opened from 10 a.m. to dusk).

that park was the biggest disappointed ever. it just keeps slapping us in the face. closing for the winter?! lame. they're just breaking us in for when it becomes exclusive use for the Edge only. We do know that right?
aw, i just discovered it and think it's awesome! better than the brooklyn heights promenade for amazing manhattan views. this sucks. it could definitely use better landscaping though, it's kind of a clusterfuck as is. meowster, if that shit a bout the edge is true, i'm gonna be PISSED.
its not a city park (like all the other parks in NYC) nor is it a private park -- the land belongs to the State of NY. That means the funding to pay for the rangers comes from state funds and it looks like Paterson is scaling back. Don't spread unfounded rumors, meowster.
The Governor talks about "sharing" the pain of budget cuts. I presume we will be hearing announcements about curtailments of the use of limos, private cars, private jets, travel expenses, lavish luncheons, parties and the like, as regards our public officials. Right?
@ skyhook:
There are several other State Parks in the city, such as Gantry Plaza in LIC, and Empire-Fulton Ferry in DUMBO. They aren't as nice or open as much as city parks. It would make more sense if they were all folded into the NYC Parks Department, but it is just a political kettle of fish.
Wait, how are we supposed to start building our Hooverville there if the gates are locked?
"Perhaps when it makes its triumphant comeback it will have better landscaping," HUH? They are closing it to save money, why would they spend money to upgrade it?
skyhook-I'm not "spreading rumors" i am voicing a valid concern. I'm serious. Also since you seem to know so much about the parks system, explain to us why there needs to be 4 plus rangers on duty at East River Park at times of operation (mostly roaming around doing nothing- literally). i love the idea of that park and the view cannot be beat- but since day one their rules/regulation/times of operation etc have been suspect.
You can't quite close a park. It's nature(ish).
You can't close nature. It doesn't work.
meowster -it's great that you're concerned. we need more people like you to speak up but saying that it'll become private property for the Edge means you don't know what you're talking about. If you want to learn about the plan for that park (and the entire neighborhood) you should go to a cb1 meeting, talk to orgs like GWAPP or OSA and NAG. Or just talk to the rangers on duty (that'll have to wait until spring) and you'll learn that things like the park's rules and use (like allowing dogs on leash) are still open for discussion. You can share your ideas, learn about the rezoning of N. BK waterfront, and even have a chance to change the rules/restrictions for that park at a CB1 meeting. in fact, i just checked, and there's a meeting tonight.
what about using volunteers to keep the park open? there are quite a few community gardens in the area that rely on volunteers.... so why not this one, too?
thanks skyhook. the park discussion isn't on the agenda for tonight's meeting. if you know when it will please inform us. i hadn't heard the news about the parks closure until yesterday. i would be interested in attending that specific meeting (PS they don't allow dogs at all-just saying). meganificent's idea is a good one as well.
drewo has a good point that I wish would be raised more often. A lot of time "gov't waste of $" and/or over-paid union workers... but what about "use of limos, private cars, private jets, travel expenses, lavish luncheons, parties" etc... Is this really necessary to the operation of gov't? I'm betting no.
ironybubble, you are right but... they always seem to find a way to shut the people out from nature which really does suck...
meganificent has the best idea, imho.
Volunteers can not write up bull shit tickets like the jerks that have a uniform. That is why volunteers wont work.
Roberto Clemente park is a state run park and I hated to have my team play baseball there because it was run by a bunch of assholes. You needed a parking permit to park your car that was good only for three hours and then they made you to park two blocks away from the ball fields and at the same time employees parked closer. But at the same time the employees parked two blocks away from the administration building. DUH?
NO FUCKING DOGS !!! I love this park because dipshits can't bring their obnoxious dogs to shit everywhere bother everyone. Keep a few parks pleasant for those who fear and hate dogs! Never allow dogs here!
