Bronx Grandpa Knows Karate, Takes on Muggers

2008_11_karagrand.jpgBronx resident Diogenes Angeles showed three young men he's no shrinking grandfather: The Daily News reports that Angeles "dusted off his karate skills" yesterday when "Eugene Sanchez, 19, Rakeem Johnson, 23, and Jason Lopez, 25, taunted and then attacked" him. The 57-year-old managed to defend himself and the attackers ran away, only to be arrested by the police later and charged with robbery, possession of stolen property and resisting arrest (Sanchez also bit a cop's hand; the News has a picture of the perps, one of whom is wearing seriously baggy jeans). Angeles learned karate when he was a teen and has practiced every day, explaining, "We live in a city where you leave your house and you don't know what's going to happen. You need to be able to defend yourself."

Can anyone read the wisdom statement on his shirt?

uhh... RoDogg... you're gonna blame the saggy pants on the cop? Really????

  • whitecastlerock

@RoDogg uh yeah sure. Maybe the perp should have stolen a belt before he tried to rob an older citizen... The whole point of the "perp walk" is to embarrass the fuck out of the arrested ones. Mission accomplished!

This guy is my new hero.

There is nothing in the lawbook that requires the police to pull up the pants of an asshole. Just in case the dude walks at least there will be some punishment. I can just imagine his street nickname after he gets out.

    Props to Grandpa!

Schmuck with the baggy pants: How can you run from the popo with them on?

  • RoDogg

There is no reason for the cops to bring him out like that. Stop and pull up his pants. So I thinking the next crime they will charge him for is indecent exposure! I can care less about these pieces of shit but as cops they should at least pull his pants up knowing the media is around taking pictures so little children don't have to see this on the net. I'm not saying they should dress him and make sure he is presentable but c'mon. Racist cops!

It's a shame that karate teaches defense instead of complete annihilation of the attacker.

Are they going to be crying to their parents now? If the parents even exist or care about them.

  • Snoopy

How do you know it's Rakeem? The picture doesn't point him out. He just lost a lot of street cred times two.

  • Dirk

Now how do young criminals expect to run from the cops when their pants are down at their knees?

  • sweatyelectric

Looks like the one with his pants around his ankles might have just gotten a police antenna up the bum.

  • JRod5417

That photo of the perps is awesome! Baggy pants of shame.

  • mihow

It's funny. I saw the headline and thought, "well, a grandfather in this day and age and one from the Bronx could be as young as 35. Big deal."

But he's not. So, yeah, GO GRANDPA!
