President Bush speaks to Mike Hallahan, president of the Intrepid Former Crew Members Association, while a naval attendant holds a piece of the deck of the Intrepid given as a gift to President Bush (Photograph by Kathy Willens/AP)
President Bush and First Lady Laura Bush flew into NYC today for the Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum's re-dedication--and also for President Bush to receive the Intrepid Freedom Award.
Bush was jovial in his early remarks--he asked Rep. Anthony Weiner if he was ready for the lame-duck session, called Intrepid president Bill White "the Vanna White of the Intrepid" and said, "You know, oftentimes they ask me, what are you going to miss about the presidency? And first reaction is, I say, no traffic jams in New York"--but then turned serious to pay tribute to veterans, those currently serving in the armed forces and the history of Veterans Day. Naturally, he spoke at length about the Intrepid--and connected it to September 11:
After more than 30 years at sea, the Intrepid was permanently decommissioned. Despite her amazing history, she was destined to be scrapped. But thanks to the work of the Intrepid Museum Foundation, she found a home in New York City. Since 1982, she has been a museum that educates new generations of Americans about the high price that those who came before them paid for their freedom. Here's a full transcript.Even as a museum, the Intrepid still answered the call to service. I'm pretty certain most Americans don't understand what I'm about to tell you, but on September the 11th, when we came attacked just a few blocks from here, the Intrepid was used as an emergency command center. First responders launched helicopters from the decks. It became clear that this ship -- which helped defeat the great totalitarian threats of the 20th century -- was front and center in the opening moments of a new struggle against the forces of hatred and fear.
The war on terror has required courage; it has required resolve equal to what previous generations of Americans brought to the fields of Europe and the deep waters of the Pacific. And I'm proud to report to my fellow citizens, our Armed Forces, the Armed Forces of this generation, have showed up for the fight, and America is more secure for it.

What a lost opportunity. If I could get that close to GW Bush I'd spit in his face.
Yes, because that will really solve all your problems.
Please leave, you are not welcome here.
Did they really launch helicopters off the Intrepid on September 11? I didn't think there was room on the deck -- but it's been a long time since I went, so I could be wrong.
Sad that this got less play in the press than Obama's remembrance.
Oh my all the liberals and their commentary. Well “W” will be gone soon enough and your new Messiah will be in office. Get back to me in 2012 and let’s compare notes.
Seeing the commander and chief GW Bush on the Intrepid made by Veteran's day!
Obama should demand that Bush sign the Republican surrender on the deck of the USS Abraham Lincoln.
Welcome to Barack HUSSEIN Obama's AMERIKKKA! Where nobody, no matter how much they hate GW Bush, takes a bat to his retarded-looking, pretzel-choking face. If only the Repubs could take a cue from us civilized people.
Btw, HUGO, it's "commander-in-chief" -- you love him so much you should've known this by now...
[4] There was enough room to land Bush's helicopter today. Helos don't need much space.
See, now that's what they should have done for the new OEM bunker. Instead of a vulnerable building somewhere, just pick up one of those decommissioned warships the Navy is getting rid of or has in mothballs. Should have grabbed one of the Iowa-class battleships when we had the chance. No little boat-bomb would get through their armor. The aircraft carrier John F. Kennedy may be available soon if the Navy decides they don't want to keep her in mothballs. Plenty of room on her flight deck for helicopters.
@HUGO_MEGO, really? Did you get your white robe and hood out of the dry cleaners for the occasion?
Regarding the main photo:
a. I thought that was McCain in the blue jacket, and
b. the "Naval attendant" looks like that guy from 30 Rock, but as a brunette
where are the commenters who said McCain will win by an upset? they were sooooo sure he was going to win. some hedged their bet by saying it would be a squeaker. Obama won both the electoral vote AND the Popular vote, look at the map those numbers do not lie.
No doubt anthropoids cannot stop worshipping death and death machines, although they seem distressed when the objects of their adoration come to visit. However, I am sorry to see the Intrepid mythologized as a weapon against terrorism. One does not fight terrorism with an aircraft carrier, but with dull old police and intelligence work.
I hope that, like those fellows striding around the subways with machine guns, or the inspection of our shoes at the airport, this show is propaganda to reassure the credulous and uninformed, and the real work is going on elsewhere, but I fear otherwise.
His presence is an insult to vets everywhere.
BTW blkiznewprez, the Associated Press Style Guide lists it as "commander in chief"
hibachi
^ True. Bush managed was able to weasel his way out of military service thanks to his influential daddy.
Untold draftees were not so fortunate and were shipped off to Vietnam.
Spiritof76 wrote "No little boat-bomb would get through their armor." Google USS Cole and report back to us.
starrygordon - There is no question Bush has messed up the War on Terror, but there is a significant military component to it. The intelligence/police work is vital to tracking down terrorists and the military goes and neutralizes them. An air strike launched from a carrier my be more practical then sending police to arrest terrorists. It could be a missile or a drone, too.
We can't let the bad taste Bush left in our mouth to cloud our judgment on fighting terrorists.
Uhhh hello people... let's focus on the re dedication of the Intrepid and just how very cool it is to have back in port & to have its former crew members there. Geesh! "W" is old news already!
ok #11. i can't believe that hugo likes w. i can't see how anybody anywhere likes that stoog. but how the hell does that make him a rascist. give it up clown
Associated Press Style or plain ol' Constitution -- the point is, there's no such thing as a Commander and Chief.
Another perk about having this power (aside from giving your joke of a son a free pass to escape joining the military) is declaring that captured individuals in Afghanistan and Iraq are really "enemy combatants" instead of POWs, and thus stripping them of any rights, throwing them in GTMO, and torturing them to the bone without requiring an iota of proof that such individuals deserve to be imprisoned.
I can't wait for this to be exposed -- the cameras and attorneys will finally enter GTMO and Bush/Rumsfeld will be tried for Crimes Against Humanity.
@Ma bell, HUGO_MEGO blames the election of President Obama for anything bad that happens in our fine city. Before you call me a clown, learn how to FUCKING SPELL "RACIST" you stupid fucking troll. Great. Thanks.
simply typo in haste. and he's certainly allowed to not like obama. in fact, anybody anywhere is allowed to not like obama. shocking to sheep like you, i know. tools like you that think that its cause race are narrow minded buffoons that can't think for themselves. obama supporter over and out.
hey blkisnewprez...
associated press or plain ol' constitution...you are a stupid head...
there's no such thing as a commander-in-chief...try actually reading the constitution:
Article II, Section 2 - http://www.archives.gov/exhibits/charters/constitution_transcript.html
also - and not that i don't think w got a pass on the war - but he did, indeed join the military...and if you don't think so, i would guess that the airmen of the texas and alabama air national guards may have a bone to pick with you if you told them they too weren't in the military.
but like g0thamg1rl said, the real news is the reopening of the intrepid museum and the remembrance of those who served on veteran's day.
@Ma Bell thanks for the lecture. It is clear that idiots are allowed in here as well-good thing for you. If you bothered to read any of his posts you would understand where I was coming from. In your haste to not only mistype, you choose to ignore the obvious. So please go back to your thesaurus and look up some more words to condemn me.
By the way have you gotten your GED in the mail yet?
Wow-such prose.
i did read the post. he said he liked bush...so you said he was in the kkk. how you drew that conclusion i'm not too sure. maybe it's cause i'm an "idiot." either that or you're just too immature to address the real issue at hand, which is that shallow people such as yourself pull the race card when you have nothing intelligent to say.
