A stray pit bull attacked a pregnant woman yesterday morning as she sold newspapers beneath an elevated subway station in the Bronx. According to the Post, the wild dog lunged at 32-year-old Nogotaly Meite, an immigrant from the Ivory Coast, around 8:30 a.m., sinking its teeth into her left ankle. Her cries of "Help me! Help me!" were heard by good Samaritan Johnny Hernandez, who tells 1010 WINS that he "put the dog on the ground and put my knee on his neck...I repeatedly punched it in the snout...at which point it released." Apparently, it then attacked and bit the left hand of NYPD Transit Officer Mike Stone, who shot the dog dead. Meite was taken to the hospital and given stitches; the Times notes that the incident "left the sidewalk on East Tremont Avenue stained with a four-foot trail of blood, leaves and newspapers."

Cue felixthecat and an incessant rambling about how this dog could have been saved and retrained to be a good killer, I mean, pitbull.
Was the dog stray? If they find it has an owner, he should be arrested and charged with assault.
such a shame. i know people will disagree but pit bulls can truly be good dogs.
@bxbrian
If 90% of all car accidents involved the same model of a car, you probably wouldn't blame the drivers.
Was it wearing a costume?
One shot... well done.
And i agree Pit bulls can be nice. brother has one who is great, but I still avoid them on the street. And comparing cars to living things isn't really valid. 007.
now if the drivers were adjusting their engines or brakes on the same kind of cars and getting in lots of accidents would you blame the car or the driver. I would blame teh driver.
Some pitbull breeds are actually super friendly and great with children. They just look mean and tend to be adopted by gangster wannabe's that mistreat them and train them to be vicious.
Any dog can be vicious. I think the stats have Labs as the ones with the most bites.
glad she's o.k.
There's something very primitive about people who keep vicious dogs (not just pitbulls).
The link between man and dog is very primitive. Whether the dogs are "vicious" or not. The canines learned early on that they could get a good meal if they helped humans hunt, and vice-versa. In unfortunate situations like this one, I hate to see a dog put down.
@Toby von - probably because labs are the most common dog
It doesn't matter whether pit bulls are by nature bad dogs. The fact that they can cause so much damage and won't stop attacking are the main reasons to not want them around.
If your ever in a situation with a vicious dog biting someone beside yourself, you can get a dog to release its bite by yanking its hind legs out from behind them.
@halik007
i should have revised what i wrote.
some fucking moron will disagree with me by making some glib analogy that treats a machine the same as a dog.
do you train a car?
do you teach a car to socialize?
are dogs made in factories?
is each dog the same?
can you train a car to be better at not crashing?
you're a fucking dimwitted moron. think before typing out some witty repartee. or whats more, just stay off the internet until you can prove that you're able to realize that analogies, as demonstrated above, probably made you the moron in the class that made everyone groan when you piped up.
if you had something coherent and practical to say, i wouldn't insult you. but, since you don't seem to, you get what you get.
Actually the most bites come from Chows and German Shepherds.
If you ever find yourself being attacked by a dog, grab their lower jaw and don't let go. seriously, stick your hand into their mouth and grab them by the bottom portion of their jaw. once you do that you'll have rendered it's ability to bite and tear useless. You might get your hand bit up but its better than having your face or neck mutilated.
Dogs are like children. If you train a dog to be violent it will be violent. I wonder what set off the pit bull anyway?
First off, I grew up in a family of dog trainers, I've owned and bred pitbulls. Not even one of my pits have ever bit a person or animal, ever. Pitbulls have the ability to be extremely kind and caring in the right environment. I frequently let mine play with puppies and small dogs and shes gentler than any other dog in the dog park.
This story sounds a bit fucked to me, I'm quite familiar with aggressive dog behavior, the pitbull wouldnt just walk up to this woman and latch onto her leg. The dog would exhibit this behavior if threatened and scared, at which point he wouldnt keep approaching the woman - something enticed the dog to the woman. Additionally after "latching" onto her ankle a man somehow places the dog on the ground(while still attached her ankle?) and punches it?. Of all places if this dog wanted to hurt her he would jump and latch on to something a bit higher and "shake" until the bone broke, no punch, no kick would remove the dog - only a heavy blow from a gun or bat, or using leverage in the dog's jaw which isnt plausible in this situation. If the dog let go this easy it wasn't a pitbull. 1800 PSI doesnt just let go from a punch to the nose, its not a fucking shark.
Here's what happened in my perspective, the woman kicked the dog. period. this should be blatantly obvious. In retaliation he bit her ankle, this would be the only provoking element for a dog to bite an ankle, pitbulls dont go after ankles if theyre attacking. Granted, the dog needed to be put down if its this aggressive, but this story is transparently spun to someone who's spent a lifetime with dogs. People get a boner when they see the word pitbull in the news, and the media thrives off it.
#3 Pitbulls are fashion accessories for young "gangsta" kids who often end up encouraging aggressive behavior in the animals in order to bolster their owner's tough guy image. Of course, when the dogs become too aggressive or their owners simply tire of owning a toy that shits, pisses and requires feeding, the game usually ends and instead of turning the dog in to animal control, they tie them to a pole or deposit the animal somewhere and then drive off. Eventually the animal gets hungry or sick and then bad things happen.
this is why a housing cop I met always asks if there is a dog in the apartment. he hates dogs more than domestic violence calls.
If 90% of all car accidents involved the same model of a car, you probably wouldn't blame the drivers.
Pulling that stat outta his ass.
We need to catch up to other cities in europe and ban aggressive dogs like pitbulls!
Some dogs are bred to shepherd, to race, some to retrieve game fowl, some to rat, others to be lap dogs to be doted on. Pits are bred to fight.
Yes! Ban aggressive dogs! That will definately work! So when your grandma's springer spaniel and your cousin's chow chow gets put down cause people decided to lump aggressive dog breeds into one category dont come crying to me. People dont seem to understand there's a lot of breeds out there that are a lot more aggresive than pit bulls, they just dont make head lines. "Springer Spaniel attacks its owner" just doesnt quite have that same ring, does it? Additionally who identifies the dog's breed? What are their qualifications on breed identification, I worked in a dog shelter for six months and had to go through the entire facility and correct the breed types cause none of the employees could properly identify breeds.
heh, springer spaniels as vicious.
when my dog meets someone new, all it does is piss itself.
@24:
That might be true, but who's at fault for that?
If you need any proof that pitbulls are great family pets, watch Dog Whisperer. I'm not kidding! Cesar Millan's pitbulls have the demeanor of sweet puppies. I also have a couple of neighbors who own pitbulls and have young children. They would strongly disagree that banning an entire breed is a reasonable solution. It is the owner that determines whether their pet will be a vicious attack dog or a mild mannered dog.
#19 I don't think it's "blatantly obvious" that the woman kicked the dog.
The pitbull was stray and had gone through god knows what after being abandoned by, or running away from, its owners. It definitely could have attacked her unprovoked.
Ban the breed. What is this incessant need to love the thing that bites you?
There is no such thing as a bad dog.
"There is no such thing as a bad dog."
Sartre?
@30
not loving something that keeps biting you in the ass?
and you live in new york city? ;)
I was merely trying to compare the statistically significant amount of dog attacks that can be attributed to pit bulls (Here's a study http://www.dogbitelaw.com/Dog%20Attacks%201982%20to%202006%20Clifton.pdf). The point is that the breed is the common denominator in the attacks, hence the analogy about car accidents.
If there was an large number of accidents involving one make of a car, you can be sure that there would be investigation by DOT.
But yeah, way to argue... all that emotion and insults make your point oh so much stronger.
your point is still misguided.
i just take offense to ridiculously-created answers to questions that require more complexity. i wouldn't have been so emotionally charged if i felt you conveyed your original point in a reasonably intelligent fashion.
@#33; You may have a point there...
For all the pit-bull type dog haters.
it seems like we have done this before. First off, can you find the pitbull?
Find the Pitbull!
And remember, the woman in France who had to get a face transplant was attacked by a black lab. A loveable, dopey, black lab.
Maybe we should put all of those down too. Oh yeah, and don't forget Scottish terriers. I mean, the Presidents dog bit an AP reporter. let sput all of those down too.
Ban the breed, not because it's inherently evil but because humans mistreat and mishandle this particular breed to suit their vanity. Personally, I'd rather do away with those humans but since this is America 2008, and not Germany 1938, you have very little alternative.
Oh yeah, and don't forget Scottish terriers. I mean, the Presidents dog bit an AP reporter. let sput all of those down too.
Yeah, those dogs sure are dangerous, aren't they? They could put you in the hospital, if you give them a few hours. Personally, I prefer to punt.
pitbulls were bred to heard cattle
