Get Your Flu Shot

2008_11_blooflu.jpgIt's Flu Season! Last week, Mayor Bloomberg got his flu shot and the Health Department recommends that "everyone who wants to reduce the risk of influenza should get vaccinated this year." Flu season can extend into May,

These groups are especially urged to get the shot: Children between 6 months to18 years of age; Adults 50 and older – especially those over 65; Pregnant women; People with chronic health conditions; People in nursing homes and other long-term care facilities; Health-care workers; Anyone in close daily contact with children under 5 – especially infants younger than 6 months; and Anyone in close daily contact with people who are over 50 or living with chronic health conditions. And for a scary stat: In 2006, 2,500 deaths were associated with the flu.

You can get flu shots at the your doctor (call to make an appointment), at pharmacies (call to find out), and at flu clinics all over the city. Here are some preventative steps from the CDC (#1--get the vaccine). Also, check out Google's Flu Trends--reported cases are rising!

Ohhh, goodie! Nothing like a shot of Mercury and Aluminum in the Winter!

YAY!!!

What other toxics do I get I get with that?

Hello Health is giving away free flu shots on December 3rd at an event at Teddy's in Williamsburg. Send an email to events@hellohealth to RSVP and get your free flu shot! It's guaranteed to be a good time...as a matter of fact, it's called Shots-n-Shots...so you can have a little fun while you're nursing that arm back to health!

While it is true that most batches of flu vaccine have a trace amount of mercury-containing thimerosal, there is no evidence that such small amounts of thimerosal causes any harm other than slight redness and swelling at the injection site. Which would you prefer, being sick for a week with the flu and probably contaminating many other people, or a little sore spot on your arm?

@dr zippy, I prefer being sick for a week. Also the shot lowers your own resistance to fight the flu.

The flu vaccine can actually weaken the immune system and make you more predisposed to the illness.

The flu vaccine, whether in the shot or nasal form, is worthless at best and should be avoided. Not only are they loaded with toxic chemicals including mercury and aluminum, but many people come down with the flu shortly after receiving the shot. This is because it actually weakens the immune system, making the person more predisposed to the illness.

the problem, dr zippy, is that the flu shot is aimed at only one strain of the flu. doctors provide an educated guess as to which strain will be the worst in a given year and that's the flu shot. taking into account the part where many people get flu symptoms (so, you know, the flu) from the flu shot, it doesn't do as much to prevent the flu as many people pretend.

we're better off behaving in a way that promotes a good immune system: get plenty of sleep, eat properly, wash your hands.

i'm not saying don't get it, just that it's not the cure-all that public officials claim it is.

I agree with #5 and 6, if you feel like you're going to get sick, drink plenty of liquids, load up on Vitamin C and get sleep. A lot of the times the body falls ill simply because of a lack of sleep, liquids, and stress.

I'm too OCD not to get it.

I heard the vaccine isn't that effective to begin with.

I heard that they inject nanoparticles to track your movements and control your thoughts.

#10, nice try, this isn't a Conspiracy, it's a FACT.

Do your research or read medical journals for criss sake.

Get the shot...I'm stuck in bed for the 5th day in a row with the flu and it is nasty. I'd take a little mercury over reading the 1000 emails I have sitting at work.
