Plan Overboard: Red Hook Waterfront Development Dumped

As proposals are being unveiled tonight for the Reimage Red Hook project, the Brooklyn Paper reports on another plan for the neighborhood that's been put to a halt. The city has "quietly sunk its plan for redeveloping a piece of the Red Hook waterfront with a marina, entertainment and hotels," something that's been in the works for over two years. Pier 11, next to the cruise ship terminal, was meant to have a future filled with luxury restaurants, a marina, and more--but "after the city began soliciting bids for an inactive city-controlled pier...developers were shocked to receive letters about two weeks ago from the Economic Development Corporation that it had rejected all the proposals." A plan from the NY Water Taxi promising a public beach and bicycle greenway was also denied. The EDC told the paper, “None of the proposals met our criteria.” Earlier this year the city failed to gain control of some of the neighboring piers which would have provided space for "housing, shopping and a new home for Brooklyn Brewery."
