Burglars Steal Jug of Coins from L.I. Home

2008_11_coins.jpgAre things so bad that robbers are resorting to stealing containers of coins? The Suffolk Police tell Newsday that when three masked and armed men robbed an East Patchogue home yesterday, the robbers specifically made sure to steal a "Poland Spring water jug filled with coins." Around 2 a.m., after assaulting and robbing the 51-year-old homeowner outside (the homeowner just came back from a late night trip to buy milk), the robbers "raced...toward" the 21-year-old son's bedroom, kicked or knocked in the door and yelled, "Give me the money!" Apparently the container was a 5-gallon jug that had some paper bills in it, too, and the son had been saving money in it for a while, but fleeing a robbery with a 5-gallon jug full of coins and bills? Really?

Maybe they needed to do their laundry.

The police need to stake out commerce bank and wait for these guys to use the coin machine.

Had to be people the son knows...

Who goes out at 2 am to buy milk? In the city, maybe, on you're way home from somewhere. But in the burbs?

@bsjones:
It does seem a little fishy, I'll give you that.

Do you have any idea how heavy a jar filled with coins is? Even assuming it was one of the new kind of poland spring jugs made out of plastic (we had an old school glass one that must have weighed 20pounds empty), that thing must have been heavy and unwieldy!

maybe the errand wasn't really for milk, and the homeowner came up short?

Why wouldn't they take the coins? Did you expect them to unhinge the flatscreen from the wall or to disconnect the playstation as well? These goons were looking for a quick score. Drug addicts don't give a shit if you live near Central Park or Massapequa Park. They will rob you in a heartbeat. Sounds like some dope sick folks pulled off this caper. Not sure why going out for milk @ 2am is suspicious either. People in suburbia have the right to go out whenever they want as well.

Life savings in a water jug is the first sign of a recession.

Never underestimate the stupidity and laziness of a thief. People have been killed over tip jars.

My family had a water jug for coins, once it was finally full, we went and cashed the coins in and ended up getting a little over 900 dollars.

So, yes, if my intention was to rob a lot of money from someone's house, the Poland Spring jug would be one of the better choices.

Probably the kid's 'friends'.

Obviously someone related or a friend towards the son was behind the robbery. There is no other way how they would know he has a jug full of coins.

Why would you need milk at 2am anyway? If anything go in the morning to get the milk or you should have gotten it earlier in the day knowing you were low or out of milk.

And the robbers knew he was going to go out at 2 in the morning to get milk? Did they just hang around all night waiting for him to make the trip?

They didn't make a fast getaway with that load of coins. Did they count out the pennies and nickels as they made the drug score? I am sure the dealer was real happy with the change.

I have gone out to buy milk or coffee ("for breakfast," as the Newsday article put it) at 2 AM or later several times. Now I live in Brooklyn, and apparently you think that "city people" are a lot different than the "country people" (or something) in "the burbs" but I don't see what's suspicious about going out late to buy something for morning regardless of where they live. This was East Patchogue, not somewhere in Wyoming where he might have a 15 mile trip.

This reminds me of a robbery my dad witnessed in his Brooklyn neighborhood when he was a little boy. The robbers came out of the corner store with their hands full of coins, dropping many as they ran. My dad is 82 years old so it was during the Depression. I guess we're back there now.

Last week someone stole all of the loose change out of the cupholders in my car. Desperate times!
